Video Experts: Is .MKV worth the file size?

I'm looking to do some video conversion and I've heard that mkv's are generally best quality, however in some cases take up a lot of space compared to mp4.

I was wondering if anyone could elaborate to me the difference?

I can't elaborate too much because I don't know, I've never done conversions into mkv. However I have lots of mkv video files that look fantastic. Is it worth the file size? For me it would depend on what it is, how often I might watch it, is it rare or irreplaceable, etc....
