Video Game systems

Diablo 2? It was good. A bit too much action oriented, but I liked it. 🙂

It wasn't even a system hog, as far as I can recall.

Now, if I could suggest a couple of turn-based tacticals, I think Jagged Alliance 2 [and Fallout Tactics if you can bear with the bugs... the program bugs!] are really worth your time. 🙂

Is "turn based" the type of game where you command your players to do something, like attack, and then they do it instead of playing the character in real time? I played Baulder's Gate and I really really LOVE that style of game.
It's not based really on your reaction time which isnt so great for us non-addicted-gamers. There is a lot of strategy so you use your brain but you also get to kill and slash people up. 😛 My kind of game 😀

Turnbased is basically taking turns to attack. Take the rpg series Final fantasy. Its primarily a turn-based rpg. Good guys attack, then the bad guys attack. Then they all go out for chocolate shakes(joking about that part)

Yeah! 😀 😀 😀

Some turn-based get a bit ... illogical. Jagged Alliance tried to lick it by letting soldiers do "snap fire" if they had leftover action points.

Baldur's Gate was even better, since you could plan moves while pausing, then have all happen in real time.

My only gripe with it was the underlying game system: ADnD doesn't quite cut it for realistic combat... 🙂

im kinda getting tired of turn based games. Final fantasy has been trying to make the battle system better for years. Its ok in ffx2, but i kinda like what they are doing for ff12. They might add the battle system for Vagrant story for the battle system in ff12.

Well, I've seen just a few of them. What I don't like on console turn-based it's they seem a bit un-flexible: my turn, your turn, ad nauseam.

In Fallout Tactis they tried a mixed turn-real time system. When no enemy is around, you move in real time, when you meet opposition game pauses [or you can manually pause it to stalk enemies].

This way you kind of get the best of two words: you can plan orders in paused mode, then resolve action in real time.

If that game weren't so crammed full of bugs - and a really hastily done multiplayer mode - it would have been just top notch.

Jagged Alliance 2 is less flexible, but uses a similar turn/real time system to resolve firefights.

I'd recommend them if you just want to see something different from the average FF clone. 🙂

Sounds like the way Baulder's Gate is set up. I really enjoyed that game but I was playing it pre-baby when I actually had time to play something like that for hours and hours at a time. 😛

Baldur's Gate employs a "fake" turn system.

While it LOOKS turn-based, it's actually round based. The difference seems subtle but it isn't.

In Jagged Alliance 2 [and FOT] chars get an action points allotment. They can move, crawl, fire or take aim. Each action costs point, so in a given turn you could choose to run a long distance, fire off two hipshots, or steadily fire one shot.

In Baldur chars act get 1 action per round. If you turn off the auto-pause, action seems seamless. If you turn it on, you realize you can't - for instance - opt to fire four arrows because you didn't move.

You can attack once per round - and warriors twice if they are weapon specialists or high level enough.

You can't save action points for opportunity attacks, for instance. If you don't move, you just wasted your chance to do it.

It's just a flaw of the older AD&D system. The newer DnD is a bit smarter, but not that much, from what I could gather from the games around. 🙂

On FOT my fav tactic was to attack by night, lure sentinels one at the time, punch pause, set all snipers on "overwatch", then go back to real time and let enemies blunder into my trap.

It worked like a charm, since all soldiers could act at the same time, but you could give orders one by one.

...

I do have a life, really. 😀 😀 😀
