I use Mcafee Virusscan usually but updating their subscriptions is a royal pain. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to update their software and subscriptions easier or a better Vscan software. I heard Kaspersky is very good but they are based in Russia. Thanks everyone for your time.

Are you talking about updating the yearly subscription or running program updates? If you're talking about program updates, there's no way to stay current and protected without them. If you don't stay current, you may as well install the original and set it to not do updates. If you're talking about the yearly subscription, doing it online is usually fairly simple. All in all, taking a few minutes to do it is worth it if you don't get your system trashed.

Ann

PS - AFA who's best, I like Norton. But, if all you do is anti-virus, you may want to step up to their Internet Security since it has other protections too.

ZoneAlarm will unilaterally squash any attempt by an application to go play on the internet without even asking if there's a red X in its program control box.
A blue question mark means it'll ask before squashment occurs.
A green check mark means the application has cartie blankie.

If you don't run ZoneAlarm, consider this a non-tip.

(I learned this the hard way with RealPlayer).

Thanks Ann. I actually spent all of last Christmas doing one of there "simple" updates to the yearly subscription and ended having to uninstall and reinstall Vscan several times and editing my registry too to get it to recognize the update. It was a very unpleasant experience. I figured if I upgrade to Vscan 9 from Vscan 7 at least the updating won't take as long. But this updating with Vscan is always a pain.

Also, download and run Mozilla and relegate IE to the broom closet.
We have a good four years before the density of Mozilla users begins to attract the interest of pimply-faced writers of malevolent software snippets.

and of course don't go opening those .exe email attachments.

I'm no computer geek but I highly recommend Norton Internet Security and AntiVirus. I just got home about an hour ago, checked my e-mail, clicked one and sure enough, it was a virus... but the Norton System caught the bugger and I deleted that virus with no problem.

Thanks feather.

You're welcome, kurchatovium. I found another e-mail attachment about two hours ago that had to be a virus so I didn't bother opening it. It's best that if you don't recognize the sender's e-mail address, just delete the thing. You'll avoid a lot of headaches that way. That's what I do now anyway. Let us know what you decide as far as Antivirus is concerned.

hey kurch! my computer friend and i recommend PANDA!!!! works better than norton and the virus updates are free. and as an additional plug for mozilla's fyrefox, i just donloaded/installed it yesterday to avoid spyware, and it works. good luck, compadre.
