Traditionally, Germans eat either a roasted goose or a carp for Xmas feast (usually lunch on Dec 25).

I'm less traditional. As my two daughters dropped by for dinner, I just had a normal (late) breakfast and postponed the feast till I had company.

For starters, we had crab paté on toast, then some wonderful venison steak with burgundy/cranberry sauce, Brussel sprouts and Pommes Croquettes. The kids hat some cinnamon icecream for dessert, and I treated myself with a large cognac and a relaxing pipe.

Now I'm curious about your Xmas feast!

Presuming that you don't mind hearing about other holiday feasts, here is what we ate at a Hanukah party hosted by my aunt and uncle, held on December 21. About 40 people attended.

Upon arriving, there were cheese and crackers, nuts, small hot dogs in pastry, raw carrots with dip, and small potato pancakes. Also wine or soda.

When the sun set, marking the turn of the second day of Hanukah into the third day, the children present lit the candles and said the appropriate blessings.

Then dinner was served. Choice of poached salmon or roast turkey (or both--I had both), baked eggplant in tomato sauce, asparagus, noodle pudding, and large potato pancakes. Also more wine or soda.

Coffee and dessert concluded the party. There were three or four kinds of cake and pie, and three flavors of ice cream. I just took a large slice of pumpkin pie, and some chocolate ice cream.

Italian feasts...

Hi Hal! Happy Holidays, btw!

We started with sliced summer sausage, pepperoni, various cheeses, cashews and crackers and a bit of shrimp along with a nice tray of olives/pickles.

Main courses were smoked ham shank and lasagna w/ ground sausage/mushroom/beef and 3 cheeses. Corn, potatoes and applesauce were the sides, along with a few types of garlic bread.

Dessert was fruit, various pound cakes and a few pies for good measure, along with coffee and wine throughout....

Good food and good company were the essential ingredients of the day.

:atom: One week til the new year🙂 🙂 :atom:

We started the day off, as has been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember (Which isn't only last week, wisenhimer!), with a breakfast of toasted english muffins, topped with cream cheese, and a slice of liverwurst. (I can hear Sunrise saying Ewwwww!), and a cold glass of orange juice. Then, skipping lunch, we cooked up some marinated stuffed pork chops, with mashed potatoes, corn, string beans, applesauce, and gravy. Later, for dessert, a healthy slice of cheesecake, topped off with Cool Whip. Yes, I'm the guy who asked about lowering his high blood pressure in another thread, but DID skip the gravy 😀 . Much later, a glass of egg nog, with a modest amount of Bacardi Gold mixed in. So I ate, drank, and made merry, then Merry went home! HO! HO! HO!

our non-traditional tradition

on christmas day we always go to a chinese restuarant.
it's been the same one for 4 years now i think. chaing jaing in desplaines illinois. as usual we had a great time!

one difference is that we made it a late lunch instead of dinner.
we wanted to be home for the wwf show from iraq.
while watching that we ate some of the left overs from our christmas eve party; shrimp, cheese tray(6different varieties), fruit tray (5 varieties),huge sandwich ring, veggi tray(5varieties), wine, beer, olives, pickles, hot peppers, etc. a delightfull repast.

And I forgot to add in my post:

Thanks to Hal for starting a serious thread about one of my favorite topics, namely food. 😀

Thanks for all the delicious replies, folks! I feel inspired.

Milagros, of course I didn't mean to leave out Hanukkah feasts. And food is one of my favorite topics, too, as my not too slim waist shows... 😉

kwildoctr and I went to my Mom's house...

Mom started us off with fresh veggies and dip. Dinner was buffet-style: honey-baked ham, cornbread dressing, baked beans, biscuits, sweet potato pudding, and Christmas cookies. She made the dressing and beans vegetarian (for me), and we had a very nice Beaujolais Nouveau with our meal.

Cool thread, Hal! Happy, merry! 🙂

Well we had turkey, ham, roast beef, greens, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, dressing, sweet potatoes and for dessert we had gingerbread cookies and red velvet cake

Happy Holidays, everyone!!!!!

Why do Jewish people always go for Chinese on Christmas?

I actually went to the Chinese buffet on Christmas Eve this year.

For Christmas dinner, McGyver and I went to his favorite 24/7/365 diner. I was going to cook, but I forgot to get a few ingredients and the stores were closed.

So, I had salad, roast loin of pork with apple sauce, steamed broccoli, baked butternut squash, a baked potato and fruit cup for dessert.

🙂 Great topic indeed.

My mom cooks brunch - eggs (or girlscout breakfast for those who know/camp), bacon, sausage, waffles, biscuits, coffee cake - with juice and coffee. I make the coffee and clean up 🙂

For dinner, my aunt had prime rib and honey baked ham, baked potatos, broccoli, mandarin orange salad. We enjoyed white wine and I again made after dinner coffee and cleaned up 🙂

For dessert, peach pie (+/- a la mode) or grasshopper pie - compliments of my aunt's friends who brought the Graeter's treat with them.

Just the right amount of mmmmmm...to last until New Year's...

Sigh...I wish I could cook. But someone has to do the dishes!

Oh for shame Jen...roast loin of pork on Hanukkuh?

lol, we had our Chinese on Christmas eve (of course the rice w/roast pork chunks in it!), Then on Christmas/Hanukkuh day we had a Roast Pork w/madiera wine sauce (I made it) complete with a side of potato latkes w/applesauce, some steamed broccoli.... how is that for mixing the 2!!!

(sing this as printed) "deck the harrs wiff bells of horry raaa raa raa raa raaaaaa raa raa raa raaaaaa"

For Christmas dinner I had escaroll soup (an Italian traditional soup for those who dont know), ham, sour cream & cheddar cheese potatos, cream spinich and some nice red fizzy wine. Then for desert I had strawberry shortcake cheesecake and lots of nice cookies, etc. Went to the parents home for Christmas, was a nice time 🙂

I Had To Work 14 Hours...

So I bought my shift about 300 dollars worth of food (including an enormous Prime Rib), they each decided to bring some stuff in so we had Prime Rib, Mashed Potatoes, Corn, Salad, Rolls, Carrot Cake, Ice Cream Cake, Pumpkin Cheese Cake. We baked cookies (peanut butter with chocolate chips). Lets see Sweet Potatoes (I didn't eat them NASTYY!),
and baked beans.
I'm also working New Years Eve so we have to plan a dinner for that night too!!!

I see a person after my own nature of the NASTY ASS sweet potato hate club😛 They were at my dinner but my sister was the only one to eat the nasty things so thats why I didnt even bother to mention it LOL LOL. BTW, how is Pumpkin Cheesecake?? I looooveeee Cheesecake and I never heard of that kind.

Pumpkin Cheesecake...

Is actually pretty darn good. Normally I'm not a big fan of cheesecake but I do love pumpkin pie. So I figured what the hell. It was homemade and very good, sort of like a thicker pumpkin pie.

Every Sunday from September through November I go to a place called Erie Apple Orchards. They have EXCELLENT pumpkin donuts!

hrumph!

i happen to love sweet potatoes. i enjoy them just backed in the oven, and served like a regular idaho baked potatoe, and served candied. they are more healthy than regular white potatoes.
