What Exactly Did Billy Joe Throw Off The Tallahatchee Bridge?

Or you could explain yourself, since you started a thread about it. 🙄

Bobbie Gentry, 1967.

The only person who really knows is Bobbie Gentry, who has said that although she knows what the item is, refuses to divulge it, even though its the question most asked of her. The most common guesses include .Wedding ring, aborted baby .A draft card , flowers and a bottle of LSD pills!

"He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge"
"And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

Apparently, it wasn't just Billy Joe throwing something...

An aborted baby (from a do-it-yourself home abortion via metal clothes hanger, as they were illegal then) was my guess back in 1967 when the song was a hit.

Exactly,

One it is not my responsibility to explain.

Two: Careful listening of the song (which lyrically is awesome) reveals something was thrown.

I always figured a baby.

BTW the version that was posted here is SO creepy!

Well, I stopped caring after somebody else was courteous enough to answer the question, but just so we're clear, it's generally considered good form to at least post a link or a reference. If you care enough to post a thread about it, you shouldn't be too lazy to reference what it is you're talking about. For those who had never heard the song, your opening post looked like little more than spam.

I agree. Which is why I just skipped it over anyways.

Here it is, 45 years after that song came out, and people are still speculating on what it means.

Now, that's marketing! 🙂

I disagree. Insideous has kept the aire of mystery in it and asked the question to us, the participants, in a self inquiring style. Seeing as how the question cannot be answered with 100% accuracy by anyone, I think he has done a nice little job of fucking with our minds a tad.

(I think Mills got it right btw)
