What I've learned since I got a job.

Today I was sitting back and relaxing after a hard day of work. For those who don't know what I do for a living... well I'm a cashier. Right now it's 3:16AM and I got home hours ago, and for some reason I haven't been able to sleep right, and since I'm alone now, I have a lot of things to think about. And of course my job is one of them, I plan on getting into something else very soon, and I wanted to write this out and tell people before I do. I've been trying to come up with the right words for the longest time, but I haven't been able to think of anything, so I'll just wing it, and hope it doesn't sound too pathetic.

For cashiers that are on this site, you might know or not know what I'm talking about, but if you work at Target, or Wal-Mart, than you have a pretty good idea.

(This post is not directed towards anyone on the TMF.)

So here I go...

1. Have you ever had a cart loaded with items, and just as you go into a lane the cashier says there closing? It's happened to me, and frankly I get pissed off. I see that cashiers have other people in there lanes, checking people out, and now they won't take me? It's bull!

Or is it?

It might seem easy to some of us, as were taking our carts to the lanes, how all cashiers do is run items over a laser, and put them into the bags. And on extreme cases put those bags in our carts. But you have to realize for those who aren't on their feet for more than 7 hours everyday, that it can get tiring. I know how I used to pray my break would come any minute now, and the looks I got when I told someone I'm closing for a break.

2. Credit and Debit Cards...

If a credit card or debit card doesn't work... we can do less than shit about it. And getting pissed off at cashiers doesn't help the situation, and makes the customers look like asses. I remember people threatening to kick my ass because their credit card didn't work.

3. If a cashier asks if they "can" do something... there is a better chance they won't know how to "do" something.

I had a customer asking me if I can scan gift reciets, I asked a cashier behind me if we can, and she said yes. Well we went through the who process and he never gave me a reciet, well he paid, I gave his reciet to him, and he asked where the gift reciet was and I said "I didn't make one." And he asked me why, and I said "because I don't know how to." He gets pissed and throws a loaded bag of food at his daughter, and cusses me out!

What I wanted to say was "YOU STUPID FUCK! LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCANING SOMETHING, AND CREATING SOMETHING!" But I smiled and said. "Guest service can help you, so get off my back!"

That's all for now... I just get pissed off thinking about how many ways customers can be stupid, cashiers can not part waters, and they cannot make your credit cards work. If were closing, it's for a good reason, and stop throwing tantrums!

Thank you!

As a teen, I worked at a well known drug store that run a weekly circular. These ads are printed way ahead of time but sometimes the advertised item was not available or was not shipped to our store. Customers would say to me, "Why do you advertise this stuff if you're not gonna have it?!!!"

Well, I didn't advertise it. Talk to the manager or call the main office and complain. Don't take it out on the cashiers or stock people.

Another time, a guy and his wife came and asked me where 'such and such' street was at. I said sorry, I'm not from this neighborhood and I just started working here so I'm not familiar with the area. He asked me where a certain business was and I told him I didn't know because I never heard of it and that I wasn't from the area. He looked at his wife, shook his head and said, "Forget it. The moron doesn't know where he is." I put on the meanest look on my face said "Neither do you A-hole." Then I moved out from behind the counter only to have the guy and his wife hurry out of the store. The manager saw me walk toward the door but didn't know what happened. He asked, "What's wrong?" Quickly thinking, I said that the guy threatened me. I didn't get in trouble. Whew!!

If you're ever in an unfamiliar area, stop at a pizza place that delivers and ask them for directions. I'm sure they can help you.

TheFactor, customers aren't always right, and they often expect good service, even if they don't treat the employees with respect. Don't let it get you down, just keep on smiling, and give them the finger when they go! Or get a better job. 😛

Every work has stress and its own troubles....that´s why we call them work and not something else....and that´s why we get paid for working...if it was all fun and joy everyone would line up to do it for free or even pay for it lool

Whenever you are in a place where you deal with custommers, you must expect some of them to be rude, and you must deal with it and keep going....it´s your job.

You will find that even doctors and nurses at hospital get rude pacients almost everyday. Everyone has troubles, stresses, and not everyone is able to deal with them....many people loose it, get depressed, angry...and we can see people like that everywhere in any job.

I myself, work at finance controlling for a big company and despite we don´t deal with custommers.....believe me! we have our share of dealling with stressed and rude people! loool You don´t want to ear a german screaming on the phone because someone decided to transfer the results a day latter and you are unable to do a thing about it....but go and explain that to the german! 😛 Or rather go and explain to your CEO why are you tired on Monday because no one was able to get your stuff in place and your pc working and you had to come to the company on sunday to get everything working by yourself. Or try and tell them to stop filling with mails remembering you the deadlines for reports on your first day at the job loool

You see....work is work....we just need to make fun of the bad things and keep going 🙂

Like someone said before...just wait for the custommers to leave and then throw yourself on the floor laughing how big assholes they were and how they seemed to have something sticked up their hasses 😛

Good luck 🙂 And enjoy your work.

You should try waitressing for a living....talk about stupid customers....whew!
I used to be a nice, quiet, meek person, until I started serving some 10 years ago...now I'm so mean I can't stand myself. People suck and they bring out the worst in others, but every once in a while you meet that one person and then you remember there are still some good people out there.
Hang in there!

I work in department A, got sent to department E to do a price check because the customer called in (too lazy to come look for themselves), and this guy stopped me and asked me about finding him an item in department C. I was like "This isnt my department, I dont know" He says "oh well help me anyway" then follows me around like a lost little puppy. I went down the aisle where the cleaning products were kept and told him that we didnt have it. He was like "Well I saw it on TV" Well, asshole, it wasnt a commercial for this store was it? No it wasnt, so we arent OBLIGATED to even stock it. SO I say "Well lets go see the girl in department M, she might know" He gets totally pissed off and yells "Shes in department M, she wouldnt know anything about department C" To which I replied "Well I told you that I work in department A, but you saw fit to ask me anyway" and walked away. To department M, because he was still following me around like a helpless dog. SO she walks down the same aisle I did and told the guy that we dont carry the product and walked away. I just went back to my department.
But when I was a cashier, I was blamed for "invalid" cards, when the wrong price rang up, (I was trying to cheat them out of money, dont you know), and the biggest one? Being on quick check when everyone came through had more than 10 or 15 items and you couldnt say anything to them.

I know this all to well, having just left my position with a hospital to go back to something I far more enjoy. Hey, you may find you even get rude doctors and nurses! 😉 hehehe... you can see where I'm going with this.

Anyway, there are politics and stress with any job... hang in there and tend to your own business. Don't get involved in workplace gossip, stick to your guns and you'll be fine 🙂
