What the hell is a CODEC?

Trying to download an AVI file, my Windows Media Player gave me the message "Error downloading CODEC". It plays the audio, but shows no video.

I think I have played other AVI files on my Windows Media Player before without problems. I have the most recent version of Windows Media Player.

Was it the downloading of the file originally that caused this problem? Am I using the incorrect media player? Should I be using Quick Time or Real Player?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A codec is sort of like a plug in that allows a media player to open a file. Often you can download new ones from the home page of the media player.
