I hear this all the time in rap and sometimes R&B songs. What's it mean? Even Wikipedia doesn't know.

It's either a hot girl that's not especially tall, as in "I danced with a beautiful shorty last night", or a child, as in "When I was a shorty we didn't have Playstations!" 🙂

Thanks. I figured as much. The first definition anyway. But then I heard Kanye rap it in Diamonds from Sierra Leone and it had nothing to do with a woman so I had a confused.

Where'd it come from though? Why "Shorty?" I always imagined it came from a blowjob thing. You know, like, she's down on her knees and whatnot but I've heard it used affectionately as well.
 
Being over 35 I no longer receive my Negro Monthly newsletter, but I'm pretty sure it's literally because women and kids tend to be shorter than guys, hence 'shorty' 🙂

the reason you do not get a subscription is because you did not pay yo bill.....pay yo fare, and then you get book

or it could mean a beautiful lady
 
ha, i think of wawa too. and this kid i went to high school with, who got a job at a hoagie shop and had to walk around at local events to promote it, and how everyone would yell "go shortie!" and he would dance around. So now i am thinking of a dancing hoagie. hehe, sorry random, i know.

I think that it became slang to say short short man later on, you're watching the old stuff, get current. lol
 
Another slang definition for shorty is a for a half-smoked cigarette. As in if I was half done with a cigarette and one of my broke-ass friends who can't afford their own says "Yo, let me get that shorty."
 
I'm guessing that "shorty" has many, many uses, defined primarily by context. Sort of like the F-word, but less cool (and no matter how passe' you might personally hold the F-word to be, it's still cooler than "shorty." Seriously).
 
yeah, i remember asking my brother that, as over the course of a whilei started hearing the word "Shorty" in songs. He explained it was a term used for either women or kids, which made sense given the lyrics. I just thought it was a person.
