What's the Big Effin' Deal?

Sis,

You are right. I don't understand, and I didn't live in that time, and I guess this thread just went too far.

I'm sorry everyone for starting this. I guess you get what you ask for.

My sincerest apologies to everyone,

--T

Nothin to apologize about. It's a thread of opinion. Everyone has one, and it's good that we have a place to express them. Different generations of people brining their stories to light is a progressive step. I think it's good that we can bring forth opinions based on different time periods and personal experiences. Sure, it gets a little hot here, but what family doesn't have a spat or two? Ain't you never seen Soul Food before?!

Tamia, you don't have anything to apoligize for; you didn't do anything wrong! If someone told you otherwise, tell them to kiss your grits!

You saw something to talk about and you did. The fact we don't completely agree is just that; you should never feel that you can't post a topic around here!

I'm behind you 300 percent even though we don't completely agree. But if someone has made you regret posting your thoughts, that's horribly wrong and I certainly hope it wasn't me! I don't mind a good debate, but if it goes further, I have huge problems with hindering others from expressing their opinions!

If I offended anyone, I apoligize! But I welcome all opinoins and never want anyone to feel that they can't post how they feel.

What's the big deal about a frog? And her getting a white prince?? Who cares about that stuff! The only things I was commenting about were the accent of the princess and that awful toothless bug!

I had a white prince for 10 years until he turned into a toad!🙄 Interracial dating and marriage certainly weren't on my mind when I started posting into this thread!

I guess its just a general misunderstanding. My refrence about the frog was in refrence to the general context of this conversation. In other words we are not really talking about that silly cartoon now are we?

Sorry for what? Rob gave this thread a shout-out on the radio show and people have conducted themselves in a rather civil manner on what many would consider a volitile subject.

Kis does have a point in the fact that there are generational issues. MLK was assasinated long before you and I were born so many of that times problems are kind of lost on us. And there are those of the newer generations, myself included, that wish to put the past behind us. Never forget, but instead move on and become bigger than we were in the past. It's easy to understand how some of those who lived in those times have trouble letting go. Especially when you have people, like the hellraisers with their nonsense over a cartoon, who refuse to let something die. It creates an air of animosity between people for no real reason.

Sorry for starting this? No way! We never learn unless it's brought to light so we can talk it out.

I was with you right up to the "hellraiser" comment. Name-calling is really unnecessary and will only incite more than calm the problems down. Even though I'm on the minority side of this thread (seriously no pun intended) doesn't mean we can't be civil and learn something in the process.

But I've come to the conclusion that the next time a racial topic comes, I'll just sit on the sidelines, watch everyone have a big ol' kumbayah, and just pretend that if we ignore the elephant in the living room everything will be fine. It'll sure make a lot of people feel better won't it?🙄

This occured to me -

Shouldn't every tickling clip with a dark-skinned woman or man being restrained and tickled be boycotted since it blatently - not subtly, not inferred - represents slavery, subjugation or abuse of power?

It gives the company name "Tickle Abuse" a more sinister menaing!

represents slavery, subjugation or abuse of power

Only if a person doesnt truly understand bondage play and the submissive lifestyle. It actually doesnt represent any of those things. There are many that believe (and I am aware of relationships such as these) where the submissive would probably be more properly labeled a dominant bottom, since a true submissive is fulfilling their own desires through the person in the role of master.

My hellraisers comment was not directed at you in any way. It was directed at the people who started raising hell about this movie (or any movie for that matter). I feel that people like that have too much free time and are merely rabble rousers, looking only for personal glory.

Just wanted to clarify.

Only one minor problem I see.....

I definitely don't see anything wrong in that clip.

Still, I can understand why people are eager to be Disney racism watchdogs. Disney's been known to make some questionable calls... from the character Jim Crow, in Dumbo, or the song of the "happy hearted roustabouds" - all of whom are black - in the same movie:

Hike! Ugh! Hike! Ugh! Hike! Ugh! Hike!
We work all day, we work all night
We never learned to read or write
We're happy-hearted roustabouts

Hike! Ugh! Hike! Ugh! Hike! Ugh! Hike!
When other folks have gone to bed
We slave until we're almost dead
We're happy-hearted roustabouts

A little borderline there, methinks.

And of course, let's not forget this shining example of racial sensitivity:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y_at9dOElQk&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y_at9dOElQk&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

"teachem pale-faced brother all about Red man"

.......Is it racist for her not to kiss the frog because he's ugly ( green ) I mean it could have been worse... .it could have been a female frog then GLAAD would have been offended or those damn republicans here in Cali bitching about if gay/lesbiens have the right to marry ( which I think is fine )
OHHHH HELL lets just spray the planet with LSD then we will all be on the same level..lol:wub:

Only if a person doesnt truly understand bondage play and the submissive lifestyle. It actually doesnt represent any of those things.

Nope. It represents exactly those things. Why not?

Those racist cartoon inmages aren't even real people, so there's no "understanding" there. But they're still considered offensive by some. Yet people gave, and still give, those images power. People who held power made the images. I'm talking actual people being subjigated - choice or "understanding" has nothign to do with it. If one sees something negative inferred, then it is there and really means what it represents.

Symbolism is part what the creator says it is and part what other people say it its. Just like porn. Just like art.

So there's a lot of clips that gotta come down off of this site. Right?

Don't want people getting the wrong idea, or to forget history. Be it the women from the Czeck tickling site (a reminder of Soviet repression of its own people) or Asian tickling clips (not only a reinforcement of the "Ancient Chinese Tickle Torture" stereotype that Asians are more evil or less trustworthy but also recalls Western imperialism of the East) we must be reminded of history we didn't create or have a part of by erasing that which offends.

It represents exactly those things. If you intend it to, or you want it to.

So what are the problems of this clip exactly? Her lips and the bug? Her lips seemed fine really and the bug only put me in mind of a sort of Cajun type, not black.

I think this may be a generational thing. Many cartoons and movies from the past contained blatant racist depictions. People that grew up with those depictions are more likely to be more sensitive and see some things that are not truly there, while people that grew up without seeing such depictions do not see the same things and wonder what the big deal is.

welcome to the wonderful world of let's try and outdue the orginals.

rarely have I ever found a re-make of any movie that I did like.

I definitely agree with you Tamia and can see where the controversy is coming as there . Personally, why not let a beautiful black women lead? there is nothing wrong with that. let it be! next week they'll find something else to have controversy about. its enevitable!

That was my point in the first place!

I was thanked for my opinion with the usual majority-opinion mass shoutdowns that happen frequently around here. They're entitled to their opinions and I'm definitely entitled to mine and I'm not the least bit embarrassed about it nor have I changed my mind.

That being said, I don't know who dredged this thread up, but it WILL be my last post in it.:typerhappy:
