Topic: Bumping Threads.

Question: What are the reason's that would make bumping a thread (for lack of better word) "acceptable" ?

- For your own personal reasonings?
- To bring important information up front again if it was buried?

..etc.

Do certain thread's being bumped repetitively become frustrating to you?

Do you empathize with the need to bump "empty" threads?

Thoughts?
 
I think it's acceptable if you're replying to an older thread that you just didn't happen to see before. Like, if you're away from the forum for a week or whatever and you reply to a 5 day old thread. But just bumping your own threads because nobody's replying to them, and you want to keep them on the front page? That's just sad.
 
It would be a moot point if the original posting date was shown on the thread listing. Perhaps HDS could shed some light on the if’s & why’s on this. :smilestar
 
My opinion is Bumping a thread if there have been replies that haven't been responded to is acceptable ,if not encouraged.. I think it is rude even if the thread isn;t exactly a new one *Not* to reply to those who were the last ones to reply and acknowledge the reply .

I admit I am guilty of bumping threads in the past that were old and I shouldn't need to explain but my reasoning is I did it due because I know how aggravating it can be to be searching for something in particular and I did it for the benefit of others so the threads would be easier to find .
I am not afraid of admitting when I am wrong ,that rather comes easy to me. I hate to see and know someone else getting blamed ,etc for something when someone else did the dirty deed and that person who did the dirty deed doesn't have the courage to stand up and admit Yeah it was me..
 
Even if it's bumping a thread..less than a week later?

In the Images forum anyway, things can get a bit slow at times, so a few well placed bumps of some “oldies but goodies” the will often liven the place up again.

Those types of bumps are usually met with gratitude from others. 😀

That would constitute an "approved" bump, then, yes?

What about the 'empty threads' ?

If I see a thread that has replies that I want to respond to to give my input ,give thanks,etc whatever..I will respond to it when I feel like it if it is a few days later,a week or when I get around to it.

Alright, now how would you explain multiple posts, instead of grouping them into one mass post to the user's who responded?
 
I have no problem with bumping threads, whether they are discussion threads or pics/clips threads.

I don't understand why anyone has a problem with this.

If somebody responds to an old discussion thread on accident or purpose, so what?

If somebody posts some pics, and then their thread goes off the first page, and they decide to bump it so it can get more views/comments, so what?

Also, lurkers are members too, and there could be people who appreciate the bump, even if nobody leaves any new comments after the bump.

95% of people that I talk to on AIM, YIM or dART who say, "hey man, I love your pics" have never commented on any of my pics.
 
Lets be honest here..

When it comes to the tickling section, just about every question has been asked before at some point. But who wants to dig through the entire archives to answer and older version of a question

Crystal , having not used that "multi quote" button , I really have no answer but to say I haven;t before. But now that makes complete sense to group my responses to the replies rather than respond individually ,I will try it out.

Flockof: Yes, Absolutley. I'm all for that, personally.

But there is also the issue of bumping thread's that hold broken links, and or, have been posted a few days ago, and don't hold much substance.
 
Hmmm … Sounds to me like there’s a need for a “TMF Thread Bumping Review Board”! :wiseowl:

What bugs me is when people bump their own thread because no one has been posting in it. There's likely a good reason that no one is posting in your thread, and bumping it isn't going to solve that problem. Other types of bumps aren't so bad, although it is annoying to be reading a thread and see a bump from someone that has a long signature space; I end up spending too much time looking at a post with nothing really in it.
 
i don't see why people even care if other people bump their own threads..
 
right, well i guess ya have to make a thread about something...

otherwise there'd be no TMF.
 
Ok my well thought out philiosophy on teh bumbage:

Good bumbage:
1. The post being bumped is very informational, well written and still relevant. (Example: the thread on aftercare that was ressurected)

2. The board is moving very quickly and the post falls off the first page before most people have had a chance to read it. (One bump, two max)

3. Someone has requested information (a clip or whatever) that you know already exists, and you think others may benefit. Otherwise, pm them link.

Bad bumpage:
1. Look at me (pleasepleasepleaselookatme) bumps
2. Impatient (refreshrefreshrefreshbump!) bumps
3. People didn't tell me what I wanted to hear bumps

All other bumps are in a grey area and must be evaluated on a case by case basis.

And there you have it.
 
I'm with Brighty in that bumping your own thread for the sake of bumping is sad. I don't consider responding to a thread even if it's a week old bumping, if there is a valid response. If the responder was gone a week and decides to respond to the thread to participate and give their opinion on the matter doesn't bother me. I consider a bump, like typing the word "BUMP" just for the sake of bringing it back to the main page for no other reason than to bring it back into focus to all, possibly without new information.

In that case, the times I think bumping is acceptable would be if someone was bringing news of something pretty important (maybe someone passing away) or if there was a forum sanctioned fund raiser (which would probably be stickied anyway), as a ways of keeping important news fresh for a limited time by not warranting a sticky itself.
 
to bump or not to bump that is the question?????? i can see both ways i could see how someone get mad if they respond to something that gets bumped. i don't really care if you bump doesn't bother me
