What's your worst fear?

Some phobia's are pretty hilarious:

Barophobia- Fear of gravity.

Chronophobia- Fear of time.

I've got three actually. Being violated by several men at once is my worst. The one after that is being covered in spiders. The third is having my very consciousness (and thus my soul) imprinted on a piece of crystallized silicon thus preventing me from finding peace in the afterlife for the rest of eternity.

That raises such HUGE issues....

[WARNING- This is about to get Science Fiction-ish]

Do you think the soul would actually transfer to the crystal? Assuming the entire contents of the mind could be copied to the computer (like William Gibson's "Burning Chrome" or more recently Charles Stross's "Glasshouse"...or even the Venture Bros) do you really think that'd be the original you? I've never run across someone who was so sure of that before...

Honestly I don't know. I believe though that a human being's conscious mind and it's soul are interconnected so that when the mind dies the soul takes the consciousness to another higher plane of existence (aka heaven, nirvana, etc etc). Personally I wouldn't like the idea of my mind and my soul being separable. I'd like to think that who I am right now (aka my conscious self) is both my mind and my soul (only my soul is tethered to my mind and thus cannot leave my body until it dies).

That is a fear of mine as well. Not knowing what happens in the afterlife. I constantly find myself, about to sleep going, "Someday, I'll be dead." And it horrifies me. No matter all the ideas there are about what will or will not happen after death, it still wracks my brain on occasion that there would be... just nothingness..

Have some faith hun. People who have been dead for at least several minutes have reported seeing a "light" coming closer to them and "feeling a good feeling". Might be indicative of something good beyond death for people who don't cause pain to others.

The problem with this is that everyone says something different. I know Christians who claimed to have seen Yahweh, have heard of Muslims who have claimed to have seen Allah, and Atheists who have claimed to not see anything at all.

1. Death

2. To be old and realize that I've lived a terrible or "unsuccessful" (by my definition) life.

Not seeing my death coming, id like to see it before it happens.:sleep1:

I think what scares me most is my fiancee dying. I don't want to die either, but I guess a loved one dying scares me more because I've already experienced it (death of family members) and I know how bad it is, missing them. Since I don't know what my own death will be like, it's harder for me to worry about it.

I can understand that feeling. Especially with your significant other, it's like you've given your heart to her, so if she were to die, your heart would die with her. With any loved one, really. Just leaves such a feeling of emptiness inside, and it's like you wouldn't know what to do with yourself after she's gone. My fiancee and I feel the same way, so it's a very powerful fear, for sure.

Just as long as you don't let that get you down/hesitant/over-protective too much, things should be fine, right? 🙂

Yea... the existential dread thing sucks. But do with Pascal recommended: distract yourself. If we're all just going to die anyway, just have fun with whatever the hell passes the time best for you. It's all good, as long as no one gets hurt. When you're about to go to sleep... I guess just think happy thoughts. Tickling, delicious food, ponies, whatever works.

But aside from that one... heights. I hate heights. I just keep picturing myself tumbling over the ledge to my death.

Oh, yes, I fully agree. I'm doing my best. Taking anxiety meds before I sleep now so that I can pass out easier :]

My fear of heights has actually gotten worse as I've gotten older. Now I get nervous just walking around the 2nd floor of a shopping mall. And I can't look over the railing.

I don't know what's so scary about heights.

Heights aren't going to kill you. The ground will.

The psychological fear of heights isn't just composed of being in a high place, a friend of mine is scared of looking up at really tall buildings in the Sydney CBD - Ofcourse, this does vary from person to person, it is usually just a fear of falling to the ground.

Fear of death is really the only fear I understand. And even that I don't fully 'get'. You don't even understand what death is, or what happens after death. How can it be scary?

A lot of fears are mis-labeled. Fear of the dark is actually fear of the unknown. Fear of heights is actually fear of death, which is actually either fear of the unknown again, or fear of leaving loved ones.

anything with spiders i h8 those 8 legged assholes they serve no purpose in the world all they do is kill flies and scare th shit outta u and we already have flyswatters and flypaper to kill flies spiders should just fuck off theyre like th internet trolls of the animal kingdom they do nothin useful in their life and just annoy u all th time

Being a failure in life. Nothing keeps me up more nights than that.

I'm not a fan of spiders by any means, but you're just speaking silly-talk.

Can you imagine how much more rampant transmittable diseases like Malaria would be without spiders? Mosquitos would(possibly are even with spiders) be the most dangerous insect alive thanks to the diseases they carry.

Beyond insects, there are the larger *shudder* spiders that eat things like rats and other small rodents that carry diseases as well.

You'd have a really tough time finding an organism that doesn't serve some form of purpose.

In fact, there's a general rule for that. If it can eat or be eaten, then it's important.
