Where does political satire belong?

Just wondering: BOFH posted a satirical article yesterday, here in Gen Disc. Several posters complained that this political satire should be moved to the "Humor forum", and a mod moved it there.

I disagree with this decision. Political satire is an artful form of discussion, meant to trigger serious thoughts. It doesn't belong to the junkyard that our humor forum has become, with predominantly nonsensical threads (which admittedly have their justification in a humor forum). However, no serious discussion is likely to emanate from there. Threads there tend to vanish to the next page with astonishing speed. Even real jokes are rare there, for the same reason.

Now, regardless if Yanks (or us Krauts for that matter) do always understand subtle British humor, political satire does belong to the section where other political discussions are placed, not to a purely non-political section, IMHO.

What's your opinion on that?

BTW, here's BOFH's article: http://www.ticklingforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44139

I Agree

Political satire does not belong in the humor section. Satire makes a legitimate point in and of itself.

Tron

...and not to mention it will get buried by the UBER-POSTER's .

Adding my voice of dissent to Hal and Tron

I too must respectfully disagree with Ray's decision to move said post. BOFH's article is reminiscent of the biting satire of Doonsbury and Hogarth, both of whose material had very serious undertones, and IMHO IF this article was left here it could once again haave generate INTELLIGENT debate. However we may feel , the one thing that posts like this and others like the thread Mimi started do is cause us to think, to consider and maybe for a brief moment acutally open our minds to a different viewpoint It dose NOT belong in a forum fuil of banal and trivial posts.

Just my 2 cents

Aha, so that's what happened to it. I was looking for it yesterday to read it again and it had just disappeared without even a "moved to" notice.

What a drag that it's been buried up in the silliness and games section.

Bring it back to be with the other political threads, please.

One mans satire......

....is another mans cheap joke I suppose. I often find some of the mods decisions hard to follow on this kind of stuff. They are never going to satisfy everyone I suppose, but a little bit of consistency would be usefull.

For example, the various 9/11 threads were policed ruthlessly for any sign of disrespect and rightly so, but a similar thread expressing concern over the Bali Bombings was used by a number of posters to carry out a foul mouthed flaming battle, which was allowed to rage totally unchecked by the mods.

consider it considered, which means that if political satire stays in gen dis then so does wrestling satire, movie satire, and any other form thereof. This area will be full of threads in no time, which is why the humor forum has been created to begin with.

Be careful what you wish for. You may not like what you get.

(oh...not to mention that He himself asked if it could be moved and it has not been buried, nor have any of you fine folk found reason to respond to it.... 🙄 )

Thanks to all for the support, it's appreciated.

Just for the record, the only reason I said it could be moved if it's considered a 'humor' post is I saw a flame war brewing and I have no wish to start such a thing.

Unfortunatley the one thing that this has shown me is that it isn't really worth the time to do anything considered "off the beaten path". Frankly Ray, that crack about my ability to write 'humor' hurt, mainly because this is something new to me that I've been VERY worried about trying in the past. In fact I don't believe that falls under the golden rule of "constructive criticism"...

And while I remember, I'm taking a few days off from the TMF, this whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth. It was written as a response to another post in a thread that, let's say I've been pretty deeply involved with, and it was either make fun of the situation or scream. I thought it made a valid point and that some might also find some humor in it. As I don't want to end up with a "bad attitude" I need some time and space to get that taste out of my mouth.

Twas tongue in cheek, mate, thus the smiley wink..not meant to offend. I found the post quite funny, which is why I agreed that it should be moved the same way I moved Drew70's thread on wrestling that I found hilarious.

Please accept my apologies if I indeed hurt in any way. It was not an attack on your abilities, but meant to illustrate that many who responded were not getting the joke.

The Golden Rule

If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

This doesn't mean that people can't disagree with other people, but it does mean that everyone who wishes to post here is required to go out of their way to make sure that they are being constructive and positive

The TMF requires a similar level of decorum from its users, and we are always in session. Intelligent disagreement and debate are encouraged and welcome. Simple negativity is not. For example, if you don't like a story, saying why is encouraged and welcome. Saying that it's "lame" is not.

Best to stick with your more serious posts BOFH666....your attempt at humor seems to tho have fallen a bit short of the mark, mate,,,,LOL

Sorry, but that doesn't sound AT ALL like you found anything funny about it. That sounds like a "you suck and here is me (a mod) laughing at that fact" post to me, and that would be my opinion regardless of where it was written or who it was about. Put it this way, if I'd read that about anything anyone posted here I'd be the first one jumping in to defend them REGARDLESS of if I agreed with them or not.

nor have any of you fine folk found reason to respond to it....

And the same with this, sorry if it was meant differently but this reads as a "this was a worthless post" in context.

Again you arent reading me right mate. THAT was said to those who complained that the post would be buried in the humor forum yet they chose not to respond to it and instead posted here with complaints, not even taking notice that it hasnt moved from the first page.

Nor did I mean anything other than to call attention to the fact that the humor within your post flew over the heads of those who read it.

Again if an apology for you misunderstanding my meaning isnt enough, than I fear my words are lost on you. Just because I am your polar opposite politically speaking doesnt mean that I dont understand your point of view and enjoy your sense of humor.

If stating that twice publically means nothing to you, than I am sorry to have wasted your time by posting the words.

Ray

Ray, I understand what you meant, now I'm asking you to understand how it read to me. Apologies are appreciated but the damage was done . I freely admit to being tremendously insecure when it comes to my creative work here, or anywhere else for that matter, and a "no you're reading it wrong" only aplies to the head, not the heart.

I've always tried to be honest in my dealings with all here, and I will be so again now. Even now, reading back through your comment I cannot see the intent at humour. I understand that you say it is there, but to me it's as I said before, a "don't bother writing funny stuff, you suck" post. Coming from most I'd have brushed it off, but my personal opinion is a mod should know better than to leave a VERY open-to-interpretation post in a thread that's already recieving flack.

And it should also be pointed out that Hal did not post a complaint but a request for discussion on whether or not satire (specificaly political satire) is more suited to this forum or the humor forum. This I'd consider a valid, and for that matter interesting, question. I'd also like to point out that the response was not a feeling of "oh we can't reply to it now", but simply that it did belong here. You then had a go at those that had responded to a DIFFERENT TOPIC than that referenced in your reply, as my article was only used as an example for this thread. Yes people disagreed with it being in the humour forum, but they were, without fail, civil in their opinions and fair in the logic and reasoning. That particular line was unwaranted and unfair on those that had taken time to reply to this thread.

Two people who "don't get it" disapproved of the post before it was buried in silly-land.

Instead of getting defensive that nobody's buying that excuse, why not just quietly correct the mistake?

~Rose~

There was no mistake made, Rose. The originator of the thread asked that it be moved and so it was.He identified it as humor and satire and thus he was correct in asking that it be moved to humor. It is not buried in any manner. It is there for all to see and comment on.

If he thought that was wrong he only needed to ask for it to be put back and it would have been.

Yup. Note that that was written after the fact and after other posts and still he did not say he wanted it put back, love. 😉

Note also that I found the piece to be well thought out and beautifully written and the humor refreshing. It is nice to see points made with tongue in cheek instead of sword in hand.

I SHOULD have put that in with my comment, but didnt think that BOFH would miss the intent of my remark for which I once again apologise.

There are many such posts that have been placed in the humor forum.(my own on Kerry and Dean included, and yes even the one I posted on "if GW was a woman"

The only thing that buries them is the lack of response. I encourage all to read it and respond accordingly.

Satire is a form of storytelling.

Thus it is classified as Story forum content.

Any non tickling story is consigned to GenDis.

The post was ok to stay in GenDis and would have continued to do so, but the thread poster requested a move to Humor for it. We provided this move.

If he wishes it moved back he need only ask. I still consider it proper for the GenDis forum.

Good enough?
