Who Do You Think Is The Greatest Quarterback In Pro-football History?

although i dont' have as much experience as the rest of ya'll (i've only been following football for the last 17 years)...i do have one question...it was said that the regular season games don't count, but if the guys don't play those regular season games to the best of their abilities then they won't even get to "the important game" correct??? just askin'

I suggest as a minimum the quarterback should have had to won at least SOMETHING. Marino never won a damn thing, in college he didn;t win, nor did he win in the Pros.

I don't think that's a fair statement. Some people hate on Ted Williams because in the 7 biggest games of his life (1946 WS) he hit .200 with 1 RBI. Does that disqualify him from being the best ever?

Certainly not. You don't judge a player on a handful of games. It would be ridiculous to say Williams wasn't the best hitter ever because he had a below mediocre World Series. Likewise, I don't think you can automatically discount Marino from contention because he never won a title.

NFL Quarterbacks are judged by the championships they win, nothing else.

Baseball teams have at least 4 shots to win a title. Football it's all or nothing.

Marino had his shot and blew it. Starr had far less material, played against a better team than the 49ers, in FAR worse conditions, and got the job done.

Aikman was a better Quarterback than Marino, So was Namath, Staubach, Dawson, Stabler, Montanna, Young, Simms, et al.

All got it done when they had to. Namath beat a team that the Jets were underdogs by the biggest margin in Super Bowl history. AND he had the balls to guarantee the win.

Montana. Montana Montana Montana.

Captain Comback

The man could see things that weren't there. He could find an open receiver behind 100 defenders in the dark.

No one greater...ever!

GG makes a good point...

There is something to be said about winning regular season games. After all, if you don't win those games, how are you going to get the opportunity to compete in the post season? JUst a thought. Now I am not saying that the postseason doesn't count. If Marino won a couple of superbowls, he would definitely have a little more respect.

Tron, you mentioned that Phil Simms is a better QB than Marino, would I love to see him get into the Hall. I always thought he was a little short on #'s but I think he was a finalist a couple of times. WE all know Marino is getting inducted the first year he becomes elgible.

Tron [/B]

but if he lost, he would still not be living that down to this day.

Tron you have a point, Starr was good, but for my money the greatest quarterback ever was Unitas. He was too good. Now pretty soon Peyton Manning will take that spot, because nobody can run an offense and make look as simple as Manning. He is the type of quarterback that you don't even need an offensive coordinator. He is an offensive coordinator in a QB's body😀

Geeze...I'm agreeing with Tron...sort of.

I always felt Elway was over-rated. Check the stats and see what he's in the top 10 of lifetime. Attempts, yards, the end.

Marino did win a game in college...the 1981 championship game.

I think Terry Bradshaw gets a bad rap. He played, obviously, for a great team...but he was one of the best "big game" quarterbacks in the history of the game. Playing in a much more competitive time period the Steelers won 8 straight AFC central Division Championships and were in the AFC Championship game 6 of those 8 years...not mention the four Super Bowls in six years.

Manning will be one of the best, no doubt, but the rules and the changes in the game make it hard to compare generation to generation.

to say "elway is overrated" depends on what you are measuring. Stats - yeh not so great. Heart - that's another story. Stats don't always tell the whole story. Hence, the old saying "the only stat that matters is the final score".

How about "crybaby"? LOL

Just something about him rubbed me the wrong way all the time!

So on a perosnal level I will never like him no matter what...but it DID win a couple SB...when he finally had a team around him.

I half-way agree with you. I never liked the way Elway dissed the Colts to head to the Yankees. Reminds me of another guy named Manning. Just me, but I think ANY pro athlete should be more than grateful just for the chance to play pro ball, much less cry about what team they play for. BUT in fairness, people do change, and at that time Elway had a lot of 'growing up' to do in the sports world. He changed, situations changed and things fell into place. Now he will be recognized as one of the great ones and not just another crybaby. I just hope the 'other' Manning learns this lesson before he is forced into early retirement because his linemen don't care to block for his over-inflated ego.
