Question: can you get a show from earlier in the dayas opposed to setting a future date/time/show?

Yes, but only in a VERY limited sense.
The receiver is always recording two different channels, 24/7, using two 30 minute buffers.
So when you turn it on, there will be 30 minutes of two channels recorded for you.
Those two channels will be the ones that each tuner (there's two) was tuned to when you last turned the receiver off.

so if you forget to record a show, can you go back and record it?

Aside from what's in those two 30 minute buffers, no you can't go back to earlier in the day and record something you missed.
