My GF needs to sleep with the tv on and it kinda sucks because I need it to be pitch black and dead quite in order to sleep. I asked her why she can't sleep without the tv and she doesn't know. So why do people sleep with the tv on? are you afraid of the dark?

Yanno, ,it always annoyed the shit outta me when Dad would do it... and now I do it, too. It's either Adult Swim, Comedy Central, or the History Channel all night. Interesting question! I guess I get used to having the background noise? Dad would always wake up when I'd come out at 3 in the damned morning and turn the television off because I wanted to get some sleep, and complain, "Hey, I was watching that." No, you weren't! You were freakin' sleeping! If you were watching it, tell me what was on? Uh-huh, that's what I thought! Go to bed!

I never used to but I have been lately... I need the background noise.

Better than a sleep aid. I usualy pop in a DVD I've seen a million times.

15 min later and ZZZZ!

Not only do i need to sleep with the tv on, i also need a fan on. If i don't have both things. I will not sleep. Doesn't matter how long it's been without sleep. No fan + no tv = no sleep. Probably has to do with background noise and the light from the tv. The dark never bothered me. A set of train tracks was behind my house growing up. So, that noise and that minimal light when it would pass might have something to do with the need for a fan and the tv on now.

I am completely the opposite. I can only sleep in total silence. I'll have the A/C and fan on, but I'll put earplugs in to drown them out.

I prefer it dark and quiet. If I want to fall asleep quicker, I will read for a bit. As much as I love reading, if I am already tired, it knocks me right out!

There have been occasions when I fell asleep with the TV on, but that is an accident. Like you, I prefer dark and quiet when it's time to sleep. :zzzzz:

I used to always sleep with the TV on, and I still can if my boo is up playing video games or something, but when he goes to sleep he needs it dark and quiet, so no more. I can sleep on a roof if you ask me to though 🙂 me + sleep = BFFs

Sometimes it's just comforting to have the outside noise. When I was pregnant, I used to get creeped out by being alone in my apartment so I would always keep the TV on. Didn't help the RG&E bill-- but I slept better.

Now? Not so much. I listen to music instead.

What's TV? Having neither cable TV nor a TV antenna, if I have the TV on at all, day or night, all I get is "snow." Perhaps that would qualify as "white noise"?

But from what I remember of TV when I did watch it, quite a few years ago now, while I can't recall ever needing to leave it on to sleep, if the majority of programming is anything now as it was then, I can imagine that it could be a good way to bore oneself to sleep....whether one actually wants to sleep or not.

Nothing like Whiplash or Damage Inc. to get yer snooze on.

Same here, but i can get by without a fan if the room is cool enough.Last year at NEST my room never cooled off enough to suit me and i didn't sleep worth a darn the whole weekend.I have to have some background noise though,a tv, some soft music or even a talk show on the radio.

I would fall asleep with it on & never woke up until the morning. I've gotten so used to it that whenever I had it off I couldn't sleep.
It's all the conditioning. I COULD turn it off & TRy to sleep, but the LACK of noise creeped me out, so I just leave it on. It's company for me. I guess it's a form of a false sense of security.

I'm another in the tv crowd and all I can attribute it to is, also the background noise. I usually just set the sleep timer to turn off once I was out. Some nights I can sleep without it, but other times I just lay in the dark and my mind wonders all over and I can't turn my brain off. And the room HAS to be cool or I'm not sleeping. Back in the south, the fan was required with the AC and if we lost electricity in the middle of the night, I'd be awake before the fan stop turning. So my body is pretty sensitive to the smallest temp changes. Since I moved here I haven't even put up my fan yet because the weather here at night and AC more than make up for it.

I'm in the dark and quiet crowd....I've never been able to sleep well with ambient noise around....

I like the noise. It's funny though I only do it at home. At school I usually just read a bit and then go to sleep.

I don't, but I often sleep with the laptop on, bleating out some music for me to nod my head to.

Unless I'm utterly exhausted, it's very hard for me to sleep with the TV on. I generally need to be in the dark to get a good night's snooze.

I often sleep with the television on

but I'd prefer to be able to turn the screen off, and just
have the audio going. Sometimes I put a blanket over the
screen to block the light, and just hear the sound.

I find that I can fall asleep in full daylight, lying on the lawn,
for example, or when it's completely dark and quiet.

I have almost no difficulty going to sleep at all, no matter
the conditions, if I'm tired.
