Something I have always wondered about smokers?

Why do smokers "snap" (bang the new pack of smokes on hand) before opening the new pack?

Is there a real reason?
Because I always see smokers do this and I just wondered why.

They do it to "pack" down the tobacco that has loosened up, Tom....

I don't bother, but many do....

LOL @ Dave...

I used to do that all the time with every new pack. I don't know why I bothered....I could never get a good solid tight pack going. Some people I knew could get a half inch empty on the tip of their smokes, but not me...I'd be lucky to get 1/16th down.

I KNOW you didn't just say what I thought you said....

I could never understand why smokers no matter the weather conditions would go outside to smoke. Smoking seems to be hard habit to beat! I'm talking about smoking on the job.

my dad always went outside to smoke because when growing up my sister had asthma, she later outgrew it and married a smoker. can you believe that? anyway dad continued to smoke outside and he smoked lucky strikes. ack and wtg Mimi now help me quit lol hubby would be eternally grateful.

There is only one way I was finally able to quit the habit. I had tried other methods, other aids, and even underwent hypnosis to no avail. 24 hours after I was hypnotized to quit, my ex husband actually lit a cigarette for me, handed it to me, and screamed "YOU JUST SET THE CAT ON FIRE! SMOKE THE FUCKING THING!"

So what, after 17 years of two packs a day, finally got me to quit?

Nicotrol Inhaler.

You'll have to get a doctor to prescribe it for you, as the system can not be purchased over the counter, but it is one of the ONLY smoking cessation aids that health insurance companies will actually cover. Mine did.

The hardest part about quitting is trying to break the habit of holding it in your hand and inhaling off it. You do it subconciously, without any thought at all. It's all completely by habit. So when you try to quit, it's not only the nic fits that will do you in....it's that need to hold something, inhale something, feed that habit. With the inhaler, you got your small doses of nic to hold you over, AND the unit to manage that habit factor. Bit by bit you forget more and more to reach for it, and soon you find you're not even thinking about it at all. It took me about 3 months of using the inhaler to completely toss it and never pick it up again. I never got my first months prescription refilled. That first box of cartridges got me through till I had enough. And I was a CHAIN SMOKER....on the phone, in the car, after meals, on the computer....and I did it without hardly any suffering.

Funny enough, now I can't stand the smell of smoke, and actually hate going to the bar with my friends cause they smoke so much when they drink and I can't breathe and wind up choking and gagging the whole night...lol

The trick to quitting is finding out what works for you. Different things work for different people, but I know in my case I had tried em all and nothing helped until I got the inhaler, and that worked like a charm...so now I highly recommend that method. It's not easy, but it makes the transition a hell of a lot more tolerable!

Well, yeah. It's at least three times as chemically addictive as cocaine. Medical fact.

wow Mimi you know what , thats right its the holding it and inhaling that gets me going. so thanks a lot i never thought of that, when i get back from vacation i will definitely call my doctor.

I remember talking to my grandfather about 20 years ago, on how he quit smoking cigerettes. I was young and I don't remember how the conversation started. I don't remember the details, but he quit by buying a pack of cigerettes and just keeping them in one of the desk drawers. It was if he knew that he had them, he didn't need to smoke them. It was bizzare. He continued to smoke pipes for a while after that. He lived to be 94. I am currently living in this old house. While looking through many different things, I found a pack of camel cigerettes, that are unopenned. I can't help but wonder if this was that pack.

Oh and I always wondered why people snapped the box of cigerettes, I just thought it was weird.
