will humans evolve to become more attactive

Actually I think the human race will evolve into sub groups; hear me out;

If you assume that attractive people mate with attractive people (reasonable assumption)

Then assume therefore that plain people mate with plain people (as all the attractive people are taken lol, obviously this is just in general)

Then you end up with people getting plainer and plainer / more and more attractive. You can do this with any trait that brings people together; i.e inteligence or athleticism.

Obviously it's very general, but I think the logic is sound.

The human race has been the same for 10,000 years. Fuck being attractive, if we're going to evolve then I reckon we're about due for a fifth limb or an exposed heart that sits on top of your head or something.

Mixed topic. while i do want more attractive people in the world, who the hell would i pick on if that happened? plus it lowers my odds of finding women. :idontwann

Why do people care so much about bein attractive?!

It's what's inside that counts you narrow-minded jerks!*

*joke*

It doesn't seem all that likely to me. "Attractiveness" varies with time and culture, so there's no consistent evolutionary pressure toward any particular appearance.

I think it's not too unlikely that humans will split into more than one species over the next 100,000 years (bear in mind, this is longer than we've existed as a single species already). In fact if we colonize other planets in that time period (which seems almost certain at this point), I'd be surprised if we didn't evolve to suit each planet's environment just as we formed sub-species for different earthly environments. But "attractiveness" is too fuzzy a concept, and the kind of economic evolutionary drivers that the linked article is talking about are even more changeable.

Actually, the claims reported in the linked article seemed so bizarre for someone with Curry's qualifications that I did some research myself. It turns out that Curry didn't quite say what he's claimed to have said. He issued the following press released a few days ago:

"In the summer of 2006 I was commissioned by Bravo Television to write an essay on the future of human evolution. The essay was intended as a science fiction way of illustrating some aspects of evolutionary theory."

"Bravo then sent out a press release on the essay, but did not release the essay itself. As a result, a wildly distorted version of what I had written ended up being reported as science fact in the media. I do not endorse the content of these media reports."

Always check media reports about science, especially if they seem unlikely. The mainstream media have absolutely no skill at scientific reporting.

I believe the human race is quickly running out of time.We have probably reached our limit as far as evolution.Just a thought. :wavingguy

IF and when our evolution continues, i don't think we'll be made more attractive as far as looks are concerned. creatures evolve to keep up with the environment, to adapt better to the surroundings. if anything, we as a race may evolve to something more capable of handling the extremes that are happening on this planet.

HG wells discussed this

I will lead the morlocks to the sewers!

As soon as guys stop fucking ugly chicks maybe? When I stop seeing hot chicks rollin' with Chunk at the mall? :3

Being fugly isn't exactly stopping human beings from spawning other fugly kids. Surprisingly the majority of people, when it comes right down the nitty gritty just want to get busy and fuckitall when it comes to looks. WHAT a SHOCK!

As soon as attractiveness has anything to do with the human races' survival then maybe we might change.

Until then, thank goodness for paper bags. :whip:

who cares....i'll be long dead before that happens...

and i feel, instead of evolving into more attractiveness, why not more inventiveness? i thought we would all be flying around in those jetson space cars by now...

I'd actually seen this article earlier and at once thought of linking it to the "Unsexy" thread, but unfortunately people got unpleasant there, and it took a completely different turn, leading to its demise...

As for the premise? If on physical attractiveness alone? Ridiculously unlikely. Mix intelligence into it -- an intellectual class above a "less intelligent" class -- more likely, but still terribly improbable. There'll probably always be more than enough cross-breeding to prevent such a clear genetic delineation among humans.

Too many factors at play, including the fact that the desire for sex can supercede even other basic needs in importance temporarily, the ability for people to see beauty/attractiveness in "imperfections", acts of rebellion against status quo, etc. etc....

I don't know if this has to do with evolution, but in South America, women tend to be a lot sexier. A lot of that has to do with culture. The women wear clothes to accentuate their exaggerated curves, but it seems like there are a lot more curves in Latina women than American, though both might be of European descent.

...or a little extra length on our arms so we dont have to buy those annoying back scratchers!

I agree with Cloudgazer. If we are evolving, it would likely be for reasons of adaptation...not "attractiveness" unless that is relevant somehow. Again, attractiveness is defined by the times...or culture. Lets say in 5000 years our species has had to evolve a layer of protective skin to filter increasing radiation levels from ozone damage. If we saw this dark, thick, convoluted skin now...it would be ugly....In the future, convolutions in just the right spots may be SEXY....and an indication of health and fertility....much like round breasts on a woman and broad shoulders on a man convey the same.

It does make sense though for the attractiveness argument

If you look at the top percent of society that is rich and powerful, they are (arguably) good looking and those who are considered good looking have a better chance to advance(stardom and whatnot)

How many cases do you find celebs or rich\powerful people marry\have kids with "average" others? I mean, you don't see Tom Cruise marrying a woman who looks like the mum from texas chainsaw massacre. So the "pretty" marry the pretty and it continues the high ruling class of society
