Worst (Most Disappointing) Albums?

We've had a lot of threads recently about favorite bands/albums/singers, etc. So let me ask, which is the most dissapointing album in your opinion. Now, I'm not looking for everyone to answer "Britney Spears", ok? I'm talking about real suck-shaft albums by bands or artists you like (or used to like). Most of mine came in the '80's and here's a short list.

Motley Crue, Theater of Pain - The Crue were never the most talented band in the world, but on the first few albums, they were at least fun to listen to if you liked metal. Then they went glam and became Poison clones. The entire album is trash. "Smokin' in the Boys Room" was overplayed and sucked, having been done perfectly by Brownsville Station earlier. "Home Sweet Home" was a joke, as was the fact that Nikki Sixx kept getting "Best Bassist" awards by the little glam-freaks.

Metallica, Load - Metallica holds the strange distinction of being my favorite and least favorite metal band. Up to the "Black Album", they were gods...having reinvented metal and made it acceptable and yet not commercial. A band that at one time refused to even do a video for fear of selling out, Metallica shocked the rock world by completely caving in to the grunge movement of the '90's. A band that once showed up to accept a surprise award in T-shirts and ripped jeans with few words other than "Thanks" shows up at a ceremony a few years later in shiny red jackets, make-up and jewelry. Kirk Hammett doesn't even need to be in the band anymore, they never solo, just grind out the same barre chords everyone else is churning out.

Triumph, The Sport of Kings - But wait, Dave...aren't you a huge Triumph fan? Yes, and it's not that I didn't like this album on some level. But it just wasn't a good Triumph album, if that makes any sense. After Allied Forces and Thunder Seven became two of the greatest prog-metal albums of all time, they tried to become Bon Jovi, and it didn't work. The songs aren't bad, but they just don't sound like Triumph. Rik Emmett had always wanted to expand thier sound, and this sounds more like a practice warm-up to Emmett's outstanding solo album, Absolutely...except the latter was supposed to sound like it did. Sport of Kings was so heavily synth-laden that they had to add a fourth member on tour, and it made the older material sound remixed and clunky.

Y&T, Down For The Count - Another band I absolutely love that released a shitty "let's be Bon Jovi" album. The ballads were sappy and plodding, the "rock" tunes were three-chord party-fests and the hit "Summertime Girls" had only really great harmonies going for it (not to mention one of the stupidest videos ever shot). At least Y&T, unlike other bands that fell into the pop-rock trap, learned from thier mistake and would go on to record some very good, if totally underrated music over the following years.

Black Sabbath, The Headless Cross (and everything after until the reunion) - Ozzy WAS Black Sabbath. However, after he left and Ronnie James Dio took over for Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell, they still had that "Black Sabbath sound". After that, they went straight downhill. Like Whitesnake, they became a vehicle for the continued career of one original member. Tony Iommi had a comletely new line-up for every album, and at one point changed the name to "Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi". He should have announced a solo career, and then those albums would have made sense, because Sabbath they weren't. And speaking of Whitesnake...

Whitesnake, Whitesnake - Another band that became a veiled solo effort by frontman David Coverdale. Thier previous release, Slide It In was a hot, nasty injection of killer riffs that gave us a sound like The Allman Brothers on acid. Yet, they also fell into the glam trap and released the over-produced self-titled album that became thier biggest hit, but thier least original. Hell, they even covered thier own tunes. "Here I Go Again" was originally recorded on Whitesnake's Saints and Sinners album with a Hammond organ instead of three banks of synthesizers, and it was all that much better for it. The self-important Coverdale kept cycling members to feed his own ego.

Van Halen, Van Halen III - Do I really have to say anything? Gary Cherone? Puh-LEEEZE. There wasn't one respectable part of that whole money-grabbing attempt at a continued career post-Sammy.

:sowrong:

Gotta go along with Dave2112 on "Van Halen 3". This cd really sucked big time, and it surprisingly got a ton of radioplay. Nothing pissed me off more on that than the song where they keep singing "man".("Taxman!", "Conman!", "Milkman!")

And the cd Whitesnake released after the 1987 self-titled one called "Slip of the Tongue" was pretty bad as well. They pulled the same thing as the last one where they redid one of their best songs("Fool For Your Loving") from "Ready and Willing"(my favorite), and turned a decent bluesrock-style song into a Winger-filled pop metal blowout!😡 :sowrong: :disgust:

Even Lou Costello doesn't want to hear it.

call me crazy (brad, you're crazy) -

but i really was dissappointed with the Let it Be - Naked version recently released. i suspect purists will disagree.

12 artists who made big mistakes

Most of my choices for most disappointing albums are a bit newer than the previous choices. I found that most of the albums that really irked me came out in the 90s and the new millenium.

Load is definitely on my list, but I can't say I like Metallica anymore anyway, after the whole Napster bullshit Lars pulled.

Marilyn Manson, "The Golden Age of Grotesque"; I know this guy isn't very popular to begin with, but I really liked everything he put out until this album. It's like he's gone from industrial to glam to punk to complete shit. The self-proclaimed antichrist has produced the most disappointing album I've ever heard.

Pearl Jam, EVERYTHING AFTER VITALOGY.... What happened to this band?! Eddie Vedder seems better as an activist than a musician at this point. His voice has become about as coherent as Kurt Cobain (yes, I don't like Nirvana much) and Mike McCready seems content with just plowing along with really boring chord changes and very few of the solos that made "Ten" and "Vs." awesome albums.

Radiohead, "Kid A" and "Amnesiac"; Hmmm... what do you do when you produce two albums that will go down as some of the best music of the 90s (the Bends and OK Computer)? Apparently, Thom Yorke's answer to this question is: let's make shitty techno! "Hail to the Thief" is a step in the right direction, but it may be too little too late. The band says they're tired of making rock music, but let's face it, that's all they're good at. Let the Chemical Bros. and Crystal Method make techno, because they're far better at it...

REM, "Reveal"; I hope the album title isn't a statement of the true state of this band. Reveal reminds me of "Monster"; it's a new take on their style, but basically, it's a failed experiment. Michael Stipe needs someone to write better lyrics for him, because the only coherent song I've heard from REM in the last several years is "The Last Straw".

NIN, "Fragile" was very disappointing. While a few singles on that album were good, most of the album was just pure shit.

Tom Petty, "The Last DJ"; While the messages of the title track and "Joe" are very good and needed to be said, the rest of the album is very sub-par for Petty. He should make another Traveling Wilburys album at this point. Dylan would help him out with songwriting.

Tori Amos, "Strange Little Girls" and "Scarlet's Walk"; I don't know what's happened to Tori. She used to be great, but now she sounds like a ripoff of Jewel (which is pretty bad considering how Jewel originally ripped off Tori with "Spirit").

Depeche Mode, "Exciter" is probably the least accurately titled album ever. All the songs are really low-key (even for them) and the lyrics are anything but exciting.

Sting, "Mercury Fallen", "Brand New Day", and "Sacred Love". Sting is still one of my favorite musicians, but his last three albums have been utter shit. Something seems to have happened to his songwriting ability after "Ten Summoner's Tales." Granted, "Brand New Day" has a few good tracks like "Desert Rose" and "After the Rain has Fallen".

Beck, "Sea Change" is what happens when the maestro of quirkiness decides to make a country album mixed with a few Pink Floyd elements. With the exceptions of "Lost Cause" and "Round the Bend," most of the album is a very failed attempt at being innovative.

BT, "Emotional Technology" is pretty bad. "Movement in Still Life" is far better.

Natalie Merchant, "The House Carpenter's Daughter"; While many Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs fans would say that she is best at folk, I only listened to her for her rock and pop songs. This album is way too folksy for my tastes.

Have to agree with Macphisto, I haven't liked any of REM's recent projects. I was a huge REM fan at one time...:sowrong:

Also, anything by Springsteen after The River. Even Born in the USA didn't hold my interest, too commercial.

Metallica -St Anger- was horrible.

FEAR FACTORY - Digimortal - I didn't hate this album, but it was nothing compared to obsolete.

Any cd ZZ-Top did after "Eliminator". I think MTV warped these guys minds and they lost their sense of humor. Every new release now promises to "return to the blues", and it's more techno-crap. I would prefer they return to having fun, as on the "Deguello" and "El Loco" records.
And their real use of blues can be found on their "First Album" and "Rio Grande Mud"

Also the band Blackfoot, a totally kick-ass southern rock band until 1983s "Siogo", when they added a keyboard player. And an outstanding one at that(Ken Hensley from Uriah Heep). It was all downhill from there.

The Cult's "Sonic Temple". They must've decided, "Let's jump on the pop-metal bandwagon". Last year, their lead singer decided he was Jim Morrison and further embarrassed the legacy of The Doors.

Man...I could go on for dayz on this one, but I won't...lol
I will just say this:

Y&T- Agree with Dave - I have watched Y&Y since day 1. They use to play in our local bowling alley/bar when they went by their full name, Yesterday & Today, and not to mention a few of my friends have played gigs with them that I went to. When Black Tiger came out, the first time I heard "Forever" I got goosebumps" from listening to the chops in that song. Then we reached the "summertime girls" era and that stupid robot that went on stage with them...gag! Still love them though, and they are still playing. My g/f and I were going to go see them a month ago with vip passes, but fog set in and we decided not to make the trip.

VanHalen- Agree with Dave again

Triumph- Once again, agree with Dave

Blackfoot- Agree with Drew...I remember seeing them live in the early 80's and they kicked some serious ass! Remember "Train-Train?" Then they went mainstream and released that song "Teenage Idol" and that was it for them.

KISS- UNMASKED/THE ELDER - Being one of the hugest KISS fans ever, these back to back stinkers really bummed my ride. All I can say is PPPPPPPUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. At least they went on to write some better stuff down the road, but the old KISS is still where my heart lies.

You would be surprised how many 80's bands are still playing, at least here in Calif. I should post a "What they look like now" thread since I have pics from alot of the shows! Now wouldn't that be interesting?

peace out,
daddy
