Would This Conversation Make You Sick As You Were Eating?

Last night, as I was eating in the hospital cafeteria, I was sitting close to two women who were having a .. fairly.., unappetizing conversation.

Apparently, these women were related to.. or friends with.. someone who was having severe stomach problems that required hospitalization. They kept repeatedly saying "The person (Whatever his name was) had vomiting, and loose bowel movements"

I mean, I understand discussing sickness in a hospital, but wouldnt it have been more.. couth.. to say "He had an upset stomach both ways".

Thoughts on this?

I have a relatively tough stomach, so mental pictures don't make me physically ill, but I agree that they probably could have found a better place to discuss that.

The funny thing is: I had a roommate/friend in college who is now a medical doctor. Several times, the college cafeteria food made he, I, and several other friends sick, so.. on a relatively routine basis, he would say to me as i was eating "That is going to give you the runs,. or the Hershey Squirts.. tonight". I guess i was so used to it, it didnt bother me. This was like 18 years ago, however, and I'm not used to people discussing bodily waste during meals.

True. But it's the hospital. Everything about that place is unappetizing. When I was doing research in the hospital I'd always grab food out and eat it there or in the lab. Never did I eat the hospital food. yelch! The worst part was hanging with the med students who only talked about stuff like that. We engineers are a little more civil 😉

Bothersome, I didnt coin it. As i said before, my college roommate who is now an MD, was the one who started it.

GQ, I see your point. The cafeteria food at Lancaster General is actually decent. It's the other hospital my mom goes to, St Clares, in NJ, that sucks.

Maybe things like that do happen in a hospital. Its just, with all the time I've spent in hospitals the last 18 months with my mom's illness, yesterday was the first time I'd heard such a conversation.

Dude, I've WATCHED people puke like crazy and continued to eat through it. This is a very minor thing being said and I'd be surprised if it actually made anybody sick. Which it did, apparently.

I like to picture the guy just vomiting a hard, straight spray on the wall while with his face just surprised as all hell, sitting on the toilet shitting and so many fart noises and turd droppings commence, and he keeps vibrating all over and it just goes on for an ridiculous amount of time. For some reason it makes me laugh.

Its a hospital topics often come up such as this one, I don't think it would make me sick but then again I never ate hospital food if I didn't have to.

Maybe I'm coarse or jaded, but people just talking about vomit or excrement would not bother me at all at a meal. Somebody actually producing these substances at the table would make me queasy.

Mils, I see your point. My problem was: I'm eating this meal, that actually tasted good considering all the hospital food I've eaten the last four months, and now I'm visualizing the poor person they were talking about, having an upset stomach both ways, and I was just like, OMG NO!.

Understood, Zod, and agreed. That was exactly my problem with this convo, as I visualized the poor person they were talking about, with an upset stomach both ways, and then I began to feel sick to my stomach.

It wasnt the idea of them talking about it, Rusty. It was when they did it. Had it been any other time, I would have had no effect from it. It was the idea of it happening when I was eating. It doesnt fuck me up, its just unappetizing.

Yes. In case you didnt see my post, my mom was hospitalized for almost three weeks, and was just released Monday.

I've felt seriously hungry whilst dissecting livers from corpses, so no, that does not upset my stomach. I'm one of those people having such conversations or discussing the wonderful ways to dissect brains while on a train.
