WoW - is all that hopping around really necessary?

Basically there are two kinds of people in a pvp battle. There's the kind who only move to jockey for position, and the ones who hop around like lunatics. Sometimes the ones jumping around seem to really know what they're doing and are hard to kill, but sometimes they're not. And sometimes, guys who just stand there and duke it out are just as hard to kill as anyone.

I've read a few webpages about pvp tactics and none of them seem to advise all that jumping and running around, but people really seem to take it seriously.

So my question is, as the subject implied, is all that hopping around really an effective tactic in some way?

I hop around quite a bit when duking it out. The main reason why I do it is because I'm used to jump shooting as a hunter, and it can be situationally useful as any class (see second paragraph). Also, if you get stunned in midair, you fall back down, giving you a little extra distance if you're running. We were playing rogue/mage on Blade's Edge Arena and I was being trained by the rogue, I took a kidney shot in mid-air as I was near the edge of the second floor and I managed to barely fall off, saving my life by getting far enough from the mage. =)

I'm sure you've seen others use jumping to spin around in midair without a loss of forward speed. If I'm carrying a flag in WSG, I'll jump all the way from their base to ours, and when I jump, I spin myself 180 degrees and spit out an instant attack.

Hope this helped a little. =)

Probably, one of the reasons why i struggle to PvP well in BGs is because i can't react fast enough to the folk who run round like loonies, it confuses us slow 'uns

You jump and spin around with your mouse in order to turn faster. Also it throws some people off and some don't know what to do a lot of them, or they can't keep up and turn fast enough to fight effectively.

It's not always necessary, but it's helpful on occasion.

It's also a tactic to use against people with older, slower hardware. I used to have a real old rig back when I started playing and I could not PvP because of all the hopping.

It can cause lag as well. Many times a hopper will appear to be right in front of you and you still get the message saying they are out of range or you are not facing them.
