Some idiot shot a congresswoman in Tuscon, AZ. Gabby Gifford; alive at the moment, and in intensive care.
A democrat, in a heavily republican district.

They aren't saying its a politically inspired attack, yet. But it does seem to be adamantly implied.

It just makes me wonder; what the fuck is happening to this country? I mean sure, we have our radicals; we have out Tea Party wackos, even our "John Wilkes Booth"s and "Lee Harvey Oswald"s running around; but a congresswoman? Let alone, an old Judge, a nine year old girl, and numerous other innocent onlookers?

Its truly frightening.

Yes i seen it here (uk) a few hours ago on the news its unbelieveable.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people.

I think its just a random shooting by a disturbed person, but its terrible when this happens to ordinary folk going about their day to day affairs.

The political side is discussed here to a small degree, its saying here, that their is a element of tention between the two main parties, more than there is normally.

Its 12.45 night time here going into sunday, i guess 7 in mid usa i don't have a clue what time it is arizona.

Its on bbc world news the bbc is accurate some commercial channels get it wrong here.

Our country had a couple of guys going adrift over the last year, its not only the usa remember we are smaller and there is less of us and gun law is strict.

So don't think badly of the usa i think is world wide, it shocks me (iam 33) god knows how the old folk look at it.

This woman who is seriously injured seems to be a good sensible person from whats being said here, it must be hard when your parties in the minority, anyway lets hope she pulls through.

I hate all of our congress. I have chosen no political party, so don't even try and nail me with that.

As far as I'm concerned, congress is who deserves the blame for what's happened to this bloody country; the president has very little control outside of what they tell him to do.

Poor bastard is the commander and chief of our armed forces and he can't even go to war with another country without the 'Okay' from congress.

Dictators don't get shot or killed. Mass murdering maniacs don't get shot or killed. Republican GOP members and Tea Party activists don't get shot or killed. Not even Donald F'ing Trump, Bill Gates, or Michael Moore (three of the greediest sob's on the planet) get shot or killed. Oh no...who's type of person who always ends up being killed by their fellow man...the person who tries to make the world a better place. Jesus, Gandhi, Martian, JFK...the list goes ON AND ON people.

I seriously hope the world gets better somehow because if I have to lay on my deathbed and look out the window and it's pretty shitty outside, I'm going to pretty much say fuck it with humanity and hope life beyond death is something a bit better than life on Earth.

Oh sure. Blame the Republicans. Everybody in Hollywood always does. Look, whoever shot this woman committed an evil act, plain and simple. Politics have nothing to do with it. Would you call all white people racist because of the existence of a group of whackjobs like the Ku Klux Klan? If so, I feel bad for you...

Oh I don't call all white people racist. After all, not all republicans are Caucasian. I just think the party's "traditional american values" platform is total bull. There is such a thing as improving society and then such a thing as rolling us backward 123 years or so.

Has anybody ever told you how negative you are? Seriously. xD The world is not that bad.

The place isn't as bad as the news makes it look. There's some people who are kooks. Look back through history and you'll find out this kind of thing isn't something new.

Nothing is "getting worse," nothing is "going to happen." Bad people exist and they'll continue to exist. Meanwhile out here in the rest of the world, we shake our heads, go to work, and do what we always do.

Work together the way we always have.

You won't see that shit on the fucking news.

Dictators don't get shot or killed.

They don't? Julius Caesar was assassinated. Lenin was shot, not killed. Several attempts were made on Hitler including a bombing. Lots of tyrants of the past have been assassinated.

Republican GOP members and Tea Party activists don't get shot or killed.

Don't know about the latter, but Abe Lincoln was shot and killed. As was William McKinley. Both Republicans. On two separate occasions, two different women shot at Gerald Ford. Reagan was shot and wounded.

The assassins and attempted assassins regarding the presidents of the U.S. were lunatics. I suspect the piece of shit involved in this crime is criminally insane.

God help the victims and their families and God save this Republic.

Oh, and peace out, Rox_My_Sox- don't despair, life is meant for living.

sighs, it certainly was a tragedy..did you hear the press corp all moan at the same time when the surgeon said a little child was the one who died soon after being brought to the hospital? i don't think this is a republican vs democrat situation..this guy sounded like a total nut case..and yet these are the people with guns..yes i'm for gun control..flame me if you wish.

Everyone? Always love that tired old line from the party that elects washed-up actors for political "roles". And yes, oh well-named poster, politics often has very much to do with it. Just ask the fellow that walked into that church a couple of years ago, blasting away because of the "liberals", or the fellow who shot up the Holocaust Museum for similar batshit insane reasons. Or Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, et al. The party of "No" is far and away the party most likely to say "Yes" to violence as their ultimate solution.

Politics lately has become littered with violent references. Most recently and imfamously by Sarah Palin, who posted an image of the states with the names of congress members who she felt were "weak" in re-elections, and a rifle's crosshairs placed on them. She later used her now "famous" quote 'Don't retreat, reload" regarding them.

The Congress woman who was shot was one of the people on that list.

Sarah Palin was not the one to shoot all those people, but if she thinks she's 100% blameless on this matter, she's really dumber than we think she is.

I'd like to echo that statement with my own spin on it, if I may.

As long as there are people alive on this Earth, there are always going to be idiots who stand in the way of progress. This is not new. Galileo dealt with this. Despite the immense obstacles faced, he managed to change the world forever, for the better.

What are the gains we've made since then? In the western world, idiots cannot impose their progress-slowing viewpoints on people, no matter how many idiots share that point of view. At least, this is true for the most part. While the world is far from ideal, it allows us to spread, obtain, and further our knowledge of the universe with the ultimate goal of benefiting humanity.

I don't know about you, but that makes me smile. The outlook for humanity looks wonderful when you look back on history, and marvel at the advances we've made not only technologically, but socially. Setbacks are always abound, but we will endure, and grow. I apologize for sounding long-winded and melodramatic, but trust me, giving up on our species is foolish.

guess you dont remember reagan getting shot and barely surviving. or the charles manson chick who shot at gerald ford and missed. ignorant bias post probably from an upper east or west sider. and thats coming from a born and raised lower east sider. 90 allen st.

I dislike Palin too... But I think she's blameless in this particular case. The shooter turned out to be a 100% certifiable nutcase of the paranoid "tinfoil hat" variety.

Still, I hope this makes people think before they open their mouths. The political rhetoric in this country is really getting out of control. Republican, Democrat... I don't care. Just because people don't agree with you, that doesn't make them your "enemy" in any real sense. Whatever happened to civilized discourse?

Also, I stand by my comment that Arizona is turning into a shithole. Spillover from Mexico's drug war, gun-toting nutcases/criminals all over the damn place, umpteen scandals involving corrupt/out of control police, our nearly bankrupt state government... It's turning into a mess down here.

Yet I've been working with people for the better part of a year and have no clue or desire to know who they vote for. I live in a "liberal" city in a "conservative" state and feel that the thing I get out of it is the fact that nobody gives two shits how I dress when I'm not at work and the cops really could fucking care less that I speed.

But on the other side of the coin, I honestly do believe that people who work against liberty in the USA are walking on the edge of treason.

Ouch. I can taste the condescension there. However, I hate to get into arguments, so I'm just happy to have stated my case.

Question: Why do you people look at the news if it tells you that the world is shitty? Don't look at the news, loko at the world. It's far more interesting than what's going on on TV.

Do you read the papers at all? (And yes, writing off the human race would definitely be premature).

Oh sure. Blame the Republicans. Everybody in Hollywood always does. ...

Even Arnold Schwarzenegger? 🙂

It is not true that hatemongering talk show hosts are completely blameless for this attack and others like it. Sarah Palin, with her irresponsible calls to her followers to "reload", and slapping up a map of the United States with certain congress members' districts highlighted with cross-hairs is not blameless either.

Having lived through Vietnam, Watergate, the civil rights movement and the horrid backlash it inspired as well as one high-profile political assassination or assassination attempt after another, I still had faith in America, I still believed that although we were passing through a rough phase, things would ultimately work out for the better.

These days, I'm not so sure.

Please forgive me for the cheap shot. I was in a terrible mood waking up today, for reasons having nothing to do with this tragedy.

The thing that bothers me about radical assassins is their aim is so poor. In this case, his target selection was also criminally inept. If you're going to stake your life to make a political point, how tragically stupid can you be to make points for every Fox Network-inspired demagogue while leaving your own concerns to be swept from the table?

Low voter turnout in the States backlights the sham aspect of our elections. We part-time voters are already outflanked and outstrategized by the career politicians who buy our votes as cheaply as possible only to turn them in as quickly as possible for first-class tickets on the gravy train.

Never mind ethnic disputes. Never mind economic drives. The war is for class position.

I really don't. I'm not going to lie, I used to, but that was a long time ago. I read all my news online, if that's only consolation to you. Most of it has to do with science, though. xD

I just feel that bad things will always happen as long as there are humans, so pointing fingers and acting outraged at a group of people is silly. Obviously, "our beloved Sarah" is partially to blame, but I don't particularly want to get into that. I'm really trying to cut back on the amount of arguing I do with people here. xD That said, if my statement bothers somebody because they have a stiffy for Mrs. Palin, I will explain my point of view. Without biting your head off. Promise!
