Tales from the Crypt - Warner Announces A Scary 1st Season Release!
Posted by David Lambert
4/08/2005

It's been last September since John Kassir first talked about a pending DVD release for Tales from the Crypt. Since then, we've heard more reports from readers that Kassir, who voiced the Cryptkeeper which hosted the show, had kept up word to the fans that this release was still pending. However, we haven't posted anything here since then because there was no new news beyond what was said in the original article.

But now fans can let out a big whoop! This morning Warner Home Video, has offiically announced Tales from the Crypt - The Complete 1st Season for a July 12 street date. The show will be seen on DVD in the original 1.33:1 full screen video format, and with English Dolby Surround Stereo 2.0 sound. Subtitles are on board in English, French, and Spanish, and the set is closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

Based on the legendary and gruesome EC Comics from publisher William Gaines, this horror anthology featured stories of murder, the supernatural, gore and humor and always had a twist ending of sorts. Some of Hollywood's biggest names took part, either working in front or behind the camera. Among the guest stars you'll surely recognize are William Sadler (Roswell, Wonderfalls), Mary Ellen Trainor (Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Roswell), Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos), Robert Wuhl (Arli$$), Kathleen York (Dallas, The West Wing, The O.C.), Lea Thompson (Caroline in the City), Amanda Plummer (L.A. Law, The New Outer Limits), M. Emmet Walsh (The Sandy Duncan Show, The Flash), and Audra Lindley (Three's Company, The Ropers). You'll also know the majority of the directors, or at least know their work: Walter Hill, Tom Holland, Mary Lambert (no relation to this writer), Howard Deutch (who directed his wife, Lea Thompson, in her episode), Richard Donner, and Robert Zemeckis.

All of this in just 6 episodes! Yes, the first season of Tales from the Crypt was incredibly short, just six half-hour installments when HBO debuted it in June of 1989. It was so short a first season, that it was over by the time the month was done, and wouldn't return to the cable giant until the following Spring. Now HBO puts all six first-season episodes onto a single DVD, with a second DVD disc full of special features (the details of which haven't been revealed yet). This 2-DVD set will sell for $26.98 SRP. Wooo, scary!

Just like the extras, package art isn't available just yet. But stay tuned and we'll bring these to you just as soon as we can!

This is like a wet dream :xpulcy: i can't believe it. i'm happy now and at under $30 Dollars it's a good deal. sure it's only 6 episodes? but who cares it's the Crypt keeper himself the man

That IS great news. Been a fan since the late 80s of Tales From The Crypt! My favorite is the one with Don Rickles and Bobcat Goldthwait about the ventriloquists dummy. How many seasons did Tales have total VC? :firedevil

Very cool~thanks for sharing. I'm a huge fan!

here is a website that (i think?) shows all the seasons and it tells how Tales From The Crypt got started and it's history.

My parents never had HBO though so sadly i was not able to see Tales From The Crypt uncut and uncensored like most horror fans 🙁
