And its a serious one guys, so no jokes!

What do you think they need to do in zombie movies to evolve them to the next stage of their development? What do you think could be done to them, that hasn't been tried already?

Hmm, well I don't know if it's been done already, I know some movies have touched on it like the Return Of The Living Dead, but I would like to see zombies who act and behave like they are alive. They walk and talk normally and can pass for people who are alive. Of course this will have to be don with people who died "nicely" and recently died as the rotting flesh or flesh wounds would give them away.

I would like to see a film with zombies behaving like people and nobody really knows who is a zombie or not. Would also be cool to have zombies who have a free will and choose not to kill and eat people and have other zombies hate them for it.

That is a cool idea, and I've played around with some fiction like that too, especially my fanfic based on World War Z, where there are zombies who have their own language, and can think and reason.

I do like the idea of whose a zombie, who is not! That would make for a really frightening idea. Also had an idea of War of the Dead, based on what you brought up too, where some Zombies are violent and hateful and do eat, while others fight against it.

How about Rob Zombie films?I think his flicks kick ass.He is a great film maker and I look forward to future gory movies that he will produce. His music rocks too. :firedevil

I'm a huge zombie fan, myself.

Now, if we want to delve into the Romero mythos then there might be a little hitch with the evolution: According to the Zombie survival guide written by Max Brooks, zombies are afflicted by a disease called Solanum. This disease is what causes them to return. It also impedes decay within an ideal environment (say, North america) causing them to last for five to ten years. Longer if you consider being frozen in the winter as a viable option.

What I'm getting at is that aside from minor tool usage or small and inconsequencial moments of eureka, it would be highly unlikely they would get a chance to properly evolve...Which is hellagood for us.

PERHAPSE, there might be a few scattered tribes that have a better grasp than other zombies on using implements and very limited tactics, but all in all, I doubt they would go any further than that.

Who'd want that anyway?:xpeepsofa

There's a movie that just got released on dvd called "Fido". I believe the premise is about a zombie who gets adopted by a family. I think Billy Connelly plays Fido the Zombie.

Max Brooks did really really well with his Survival Guide and World War Z, however, for everyday Zombie life, try "Book of the Dead 1" and "BotD 2", collection of authors detailing everyday life in a zombie world, parties, sex, personalities, how to stay mobile, etc.

I have a glassed in enclosure with a shotgun and shells "In case of Zombies, Break Glass" got the idea from a pic I saw on the web.

seriously though, i don't think their is much room left for evolving zombies that hasn't been done before. They've already been made to be fast, and made to learn and show some level of intelegence. They;ve also been shown to be created in ways other then you typical black magic, ie Resident Evil, and we've also seen zombies that aren;t really zombies, ie 28 days later.

We've even seen zombies act like normal people, in a comedy movie i can;t remember the life of where a guy comes back from the dead to take a girl to the prom, and another comedy movie called "Idol Hands."

Truth be told, i think everything has already been done.

The problem with zombies is that they only ever seem to star in horror films. For them to advance to the next step they need to branch out and become more eclectic. We could have zombie political satire, perhaps. Or maybe zombie vaudeville with legs flying in all directions as decayed and wizened tendons finally give out under the stress of performing the can-can. I think zombie porn has already been done and the less said about that the better.

If all else fails just watch 28 Days Later again and pretend it's the first time you've seen it.

That sort of zombie concept was actually somewhat touched upon years ago with a really crappy, ZERO budget zombie flick called "Shatterdead".
Don't bother with it, though...like I said, the movie stinks worse than horseshit on a hot plate.

I'd say eliminate the cliches:

Human stupidity: Have less people walking backwards down a corridor, freezing in panic, not believing anything, turning against each other, etc. Instead, have people adapt to the situation and try to work together to figure out what to do. Resident Evil was good at this.

Slow/dumb zombies: I think the Borg from Star Trek make excellent 'zombies:' Obsessive, but by no means dumb--they adapt to situations, come up with combat tactics, and are tough in a fight. The raptors from Jurassic park are other good examples, if you'll allow me to stretch the definition. I've never seen it, but what I've heard of 'Tombs of the Blind Dead' has a great wrinkle: The zombies are undead templar knights who ride horses and track people by the sound of their heart beating.

Craziness: The optimist in me believes that not every group would have one person go nuts.

Evolution: Part of one of the points above, but it'd be intriguing if there were 'types' of zombies, a la video games. Maybe some zombies were 'workers,' others were scouts, some were fighters, and some were planners.

Just a few of my thoughts.

Avenger's got some great ideas as far as evolution, and referring to raptors of Jurassic Park...

Even assuming higher brain function is lost, they could still hunt in an organized fashion, in packs.

Here's a twist, though... Since they're first dead and then undead, have them connected to some transcendent force... I know it sounds odd, but make death the ultimate enlightenment -- the end of self. Whereas in Heaven, all might theoretically be connected and self in a sense might be lost in communion with God and all, these are like Heavenly Rejects -- still put into that transcendental connection, but remaining corporeal and material in their desires and needs...

You wind up with telepathic zombies as a result. When one sees prey, suddenly all become aware of its location. There's a new hurdle for the human prey to overcome.

On the fence...

On one hand I see the point that the "standard zombie flick" has been done over and over and needs a change, but DUDE... have you guys seen Romero's Land of the Dead?! Where the zombie thinks and has feelings? It was so awful. It could have been done a lot better. I am so mad at myself for paying $10 to see it. Sooo whatever is done, it needs to be done well.

What I think we need is more zombie parodies. (see: Shaun of the Dead).

always thought of them as commentary on our society's ills, actually a lot of modern monsters are commentaries on society, in general...

zombies = corporations, evil governments, things that induce complacency/conformity
vampires = underground, subcultures (like how zombies are so "urrrr" and vampires are so lively, seem like they're polar opposites in some respects)
werewolves = man's urge to go back to primitive ways
aliens = xenophobia, fear of foreigners that sort of thing

i had a friend who studied this sort of thing... that's as much as i could remember, he has like a big list of these

I hate zombie movies, they're not scary in the least and the genre has been done to death. I liked Shaun of the Dead though, that was hilarious.

I for one, liked Land of the Dead, gave us new insight to who the zombies really were
