Yes I am a Christian, yet there are times I am ashamed to publicly admit it, when it seems that a good majority of Christians behave just the opposite of what Jesus taught.
They are the very things Jesus warned not to be: Proud. Judgemental. Hypocrites. Self-serving. Self-Loving.
I grew up in a Southern Baptist church (took me years to have the courage to break the chain).
I'm sure there ARE decent and true Christians within their ranks, but the ones I have met were catty, loved to spread rumors and engage in gossip and held disdain for anyone not like them.
'Jesus Loves me, but not you, because you're not like I am'
I was raised to always accept things, at face value because 'It's all a part of God's plan'
But if I dared to ask or question His Plan... well that was a sin. It was a lack of faith and I'm going to hell
I grew up in fear of an angry and wrathful God who just waited for me to screw up, just so He could condemn me. I grew up feeling like God actually enjoyed condemning and sending them to eternal damnation
If I support Same-Sex rights, I'm going to hell
If I drink, I'm going to hell
If I mow the grass on Sunday, I'm going to hell
If I dare to ask God 'Why', I'm going to hell
If I didn't tithe enough, I'm going to hell
It took me years to understand that God does not just love a select handful of people. He does not only love the followers of one church or religion.
He loves all, even if they are the exact hypocrites He warned of
But I still see the hate. I still hear it being preached. Hate of the gays, hate of those who happen to follow a different religion, hate of anybody who is not exactly like they are
They preach what Jesus taught, but never seem willing to want to live by it.
If they are true representatives of God and His Church, I can honestly see why so many people have embraced Atheism
I think Gandhi said it best of all: I very much like your Christ, but I very much dislike your Christians, for they are so unlike your Christ
The man had a very valid point
