Welcome to the world of management babe. I've had friends and family work under me before. Some people can handle that, a LOT can't. It's hard for them to see a "peer" get promoted above them. For people who are grown up about it, it's awesome, because you just do your job and your friend will go to bat for you as a boss, if not it just makes tension. Older people (her mom), can really be weird about working for younger people.

You just learn to be firm. When something needs to be done, let them know, if they have a problem talk to them about it, if they can't get with the program in the end, sit with your boss, let them know that you can't effectively do your job without their help and in the end sometimes, people that can't hack it will have to be cut loose. It's a tough thing to get into when you aren't used to it. Nothing sucks like employees who don't care about their job. More times then not, I've been fortunate with mine.

If it were possible without screwing everyone else, they would be cut loose. However we work at a convenience store, it's not the easy. If we had someone else to replace them, then they'd be fired so fast their heads would spin.
