On the advice of a friend, I'll be picking up my copy of "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart soon. It's the tale of a man who talks to a 6-foot-tall imaginary rabbit.
Thinking about it, the rabbit seems to be the imaginary talking animal of choice, often offering secret knowledge or wisdom unattainable through ordinary means. Consider, for instance, "Donnie Darko" or "The Last Mimzy". Rabbits lead people to secret places -- a tradition begun in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and referenced ever since -- and they trick people a la Br'er Rabbit and Bugs Bunny.
I wonder how that sort of thing gets decided? Who decided that the rabbit would be the sometimes mischievous keeper of secret knowledge, above any other animal. I'd have probably made it an elephant myself...
