For those who know me well, they know a good portion of my heritage is Native American. Even fewer of those people know my father is extremely proud of this fact, and every now and then throws it into a conversation to remind me, lest I somehow forget from the last time he reminded me.
My father, mother, sister, and I were all looking at houses today, and in particular, a really nice looking one in an average neighborhood. He and I happened to find ourselves in the same bedroom in the basement, looking at the features and closets and whatnot. He turned around suddenly and said, "You're becoming too white. What's going on...?"
How does one even respond to this? My father sounded like the Hitler of Indians...no whities...or...something like that.
I said, "Well dad, I haven't been REALLY outside in over a year."
"Why?"
"Well...I mean...it's harder when I'm in an apartment to enjoy dancing through the forest. I mean, seriously though, I don't want to get any wrinkles or skin cancer or anything."
"LOOK at me. And look at your mother. Do you see wrinkles on either of us?"
"No..."
"And you get we're old right...?"
"Yeah dad..."
"We've been outside our whole lives and are still fine, wrinkle free. You've got natural sun resistance anyway."
"Yeah dad I know. You know how dark I get."
"Yeah. You need to get out more. Get your color back."
AWKWARD!
