Hello Folks,
After having spent the last 4 days in the hospital, I just want to remind you all to listen to your bodies!! When you think something is wrong, there usually IS something wrong. Even when you pay attention, like I did, things can sneak up on you that require serious actions.
Surgery is NOT fun and recovery sometimes hurts more than the cause of your problem.

Ladies, as much as we hate the stirrups, get your checkups! It can mean the difference between life and death. Between checkups, STILL pay attention. I did and they found a tumor. It's not fun to hear the following,"It seems that there is a tumor that needs immediate action." WHAT??? Yep, tumor. So they start the "tests." They get out their knives. They put you "under." GRRRRRR It's not fun. This was under the best scrutiny. Imagine what happens when you IGNORE your health!!!!!

If you haven't had a yearly exam *pap smear, etc*, go get one. The American Cancer Society also provides information on self breast exams that you can do every time you shower. Cover all your bases, it's the only body you've got.

Men, you too! You have people who love you and would hate to see you gone for lack of a few hours paying attention to your health. Get thee to a doctor!

OK, this ends your public service announcement.
Joby, who will also be away for a while and now ya know why.

JoBelle, your warning can't be mentioned frequently enough! Thank you! My best wishes for a quick and complete recovery.

Aw, darlin', I'm SO glad you caught that early on. Get well soon!

Get Well Soon!

Glad to hear it was caught in a fashion timely enough to avoid catastrophe, JoBelle!

GuitarPeteTklr and njjen wish you a smooth and speedy recovery!:D

What, me worry?

"Only the good die young"....we're fairly safe I think!;) Just went in for a battery of stupid tests today also! Man, Barium tastes like crap! You'd think they would make it taste better if they want you to drink a damn quart of the junk, wouldn't ya?

Jo, don't be doing anything dramatic for at least another 5+ years, until I can officially retire and invite some of my "cousins" to come visit me here on LI! No fair escaping being tickled that way, okay?

Now be a good girl/woman/vixen and do what you're told by the nice(?) doctors and feel better soon! Q

P.S....when did you ever say you hated stirrups...lol......

I hope you feel better soon...i'm not real good at these things so ummmm thats about it. :)

get well soon joby

Had no joy on the phone, now i know why. Hope you enjoy the comedy videos (yes i know, it only hurts when you laugh!)

Thank you for sharing your experience. I know it is not the funnest thing in the world to talk about, but if it helps someone catch something that could be life threatening, then it's worth it.

Get well soon, and let us know how you're doing!

Have a speedy recovery!!

OMG sweetie! I am so sorry to hear about what you have just gone through, but relieved that they found it in time!

Cancer runs VERY strong in my family (every member above 35 has been affected with it, some younger), especially tumors and cancer of the reproductive organs. I hear you loud and clear on the importance of those yearly exams. We may not like them, but they are absolutely necessary!

Thank you for being open and honest enough to use your experience as a reminder to others about the dangers in ignoring symptoms, and/or not taking precautions by getting checked on schedule. Tumors and cancer can spread to a non-treatable point within months, so please, NEVER get lazy about getting those exams!

*Hugs* to you Jo. You're in my thoughts and I wish you a full, speedy recovery. Please keep us updated!

Excellent Advice From Jo

Glad you caught it early and have made a full recovery.

You make a good point about men. I'm now at an age when contemporaries start dropping dead because they're knotheads, and refuse to go to the doctor. I'm guilty myself: Iron Man Strel, who collapsed at work last fall because I thought those nagging symptoms were no big deal. Trip to the hospital and many procedures later, I've changed my mind, so I guess I'll live to spend my kids' inheritance.

No Barium, though. Question for Q: Does it taste as bad as your Eggplant Surprise?

Excellent advice, Jo. I wish you a speedy recovery, and know that my thoughts are with you sweetie. :Kiss2:

Barium baby!

Low blow Strel...WAY below the belt....lol! Wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the culprit though! Q

I'm SO glad you're ok Jo. I've been down that road as well including the surgery and it's not fun.

And that's super that you are reminding people to make sure they are checked every year. Don't let something go on and on without getting it fixed. Maybe it won't be as severe as what Jo went through but by catching it early you can get it taken care of and get back to living.

Take Care Jo!

HMO QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Now Jo gets to deal with the most fearsome part of her brush with death: fighting with her health insurance company. Here's some guidance.

Q. What does HMO stand for?

A. This is actually a variation of the phrase, "Hey, Moe". Its roots go back to a concept pioneered by Doctor Moe Howard, who discovered that a patient could be made to forget about the pain in his foot if he was poked hard enough in the eyes. Modern practice replaces the physical finger poke with hi-tech equivalents such as voice mail and referral slips, but the result remains the same.

Q. Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification?

A. No. Only those you need.

Q. I just joined a new HMO. How difficult will it be to choose the doctor I want?

A. Just slightly more difficult than choosing your parents. Your insurer will provide you with a book listing all the doctors who were participating in the plan at the time the information was gathered. These doctors basically fall into two categories: those who are no longer accepting new patients, and those who will see you but are no longer part of the plan. But don't worry -- the remaining doctor who is still in the plan and accepting new patients has an office just a half day's drive away.

Q. What are pre-existing conditions?

A. This is a phrase used by the grammatically challenged when they want to talk about existing conditions. Unfortunately, we appear to be pre-stuck with it.

Q. Well, can I get coverage for my pre-existing conditions?

A. Certainly, as long as they don't require any treatment.

Q. What happens if I want to try alternative forms of medicine?

A. You'll need to find alternative forms of payment.

Q. My pharmacy plan only covers generic drugs, but I need the name brand. I tried the generic medication, but it gave me a stomach ache. What should I do?

A. Poke yourself in the eye.

Q. I have an 80/20 plan with a $200 deductible and a $2,000 yearly cap. My insurer reimbursed the doctor for my out-patient surgery but I'd already paid my bill. What should I do?

A. You have two choices. Your doctor can sign the reimbursement check over to you, or you can ask him to invest the money for you in one of those great offers that only doctors and dentists hear about, like windmill farms or frog hatcheries.

Q. What should I do if I get sick while traveling?

A. Try sitting in a different part of the bus.

Q. No, I mean what if I'm away from home and I get sick?

A. You really shouldn't do that. You'll have a hard time seeing your primary care physician. It's best to wait until you return, and then get sick.

Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he can handle my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform a heart transplant right in his office?

A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're out is the $10 co-payment, there's no harm giving him a shot at it.

You're in my thoughts and prayers, JoBelle...

and thank you for thinking of others--reminding us to take care of ourselves--while you are trying to heal. That shows all of us what a tremendous amount of character you possess. My e-mail address is [email protected]; please let me know if you need anything, or if you simply want another friend to talk to. I know you have many friends here in the TMF, as evidenced by the replies; hopefully, you can find room for one more!

P.S. I can't help it; the smart-ass in me is screaming to be set free at the moment. Not only do you have character, you ARE a character! :D

True and how!

Truer words were never spoken...errr..typed! But, she's OUR character, so hurry up and get well, willya? Q

Let me say, It was a great pleasure to read good wishes from y'all. I'm a firm believer in positive thoughts and the way they weave through the air to a person. Thanks so much!

Just to let y'all know what's up.
They removed a tumor during my surgery. It was the size of a tennis ball. Tumors and hail are always compared to sports balls...why is that? ;) Anyway, that and they found I've some uterine problems that are indicative of a variety of conditions that may or may not be treatable. Cancer being among them. I'll know on Tuesday.

Not to get into the specs of it, because it's just icky..lol....but suffice to say that I'm on a long road. I'm due for surgery #2 in a few weeks. AND, will likely end up having a hysterectomy which will put me in the recovery bed for more weeks. GRRRR..I am SO not a person that likes to be kept down......well, unless you're tying me down tight for playtime. *oops* ;)

So, I've got the puter where I can get at it...and since I'm not mobile in the real world yet, I may get to play here a bit. Thank the gods for that! I'll be sure to tell y'all if I plan to kick the bucket! Until then, you have to put up with me!

Thanks so much for kind words!! I got all weepy! Just make me cry why don'tcha???? I'd like to give a collective hug to you all for taking the time to be SO uplifting!!! It really has helped more than you all know!!! There is a saying about faith in humanity..., 'tis true and you are such a beautiful group of people!

Funny how you join a group for one purpose and it somehow turns out to be so much more than that.

Joby, still breathin' and bitchin' as usual. :p

Oh JoBelle, how I feel with you! Such terrible news, and you're just joking about. Your 'balls' (in a figurative macho way of speaking) are much bigger than just the tennis variety!

Let me repeat my best wishes for a quick and COMPLETE recovery! Luckily, medicinal skills have advanced greatly on onkology, still you're facing a terrible period of waiting.

If you have that surgery think of it this way Jo....

No More Monthly visitors! YAHOO!!!

When I had my surgery, for much the same reason as yours, I took all my remaining monthly female supplies, wrapped them in bows and handed them too all my gal friends! LOL

My dear, we have never spoken but I am deeply moved by your courage under fire. I have had my fun in the stirrups too and know how stiff you are keeping your upper lip. Give yourself ample time to recover, and accept the kindnesses of those who love you.
Holding you in my good thoughts,
evilqueen
