If you can't be with family on Thanksgiving, what do you do instead?

I can't be with my family again this year. It's just so darn
expensive to fly into Charleston, and then I have to tack
on an additional $300 roundtrip when I bring the puppies.
Gotta save that pricey trip for Christmas. For those of you
who live too far from family to be with them on Thanksgiving,
what do you do? Do you volunteer somewhere? Do friends
invite you to spend it with them? I'd love to hear what you
guys do. I know it's hard to be away from your family around
the holidays.

Not for me. I find it preferable. 🙂 Thanksgiving and Christmas are just another day here. I read a good book, order a pizza and weather permitting go for a walk at Zilker Park. Or I might take a drive through the Hill Country and enjoy the solitude.

We go exploring/hiking in and around our community. We even went so far as buying a bbq'd chicken instead of a turkey. Part of our extended family who live an hour away invited us for Thanksgiving but we knew it was out of a sense of obligation so we gratefully declined. The phone definitely helps as well because even though we can't be there we can still get in touch on the holidays.

Same here.

The holiday's for me usual involve alcohol.I normally end up meeting with a few close friends for a couple hours. 🙂 Sometimes you can catch a movie if your local theater is open.

For Turkey Day Bill and I feed our awesome Tribe instead of blood family; this year we'll have our Jhoti and Knot, plus Jhoti's daughter and her dad, Jhoti's sister and hubby and their new baby, and my other bestest friend Calli is coming from Texas (some of you met her at NEST 2007). I also know that BDSM friends of ours have their own celebration that day since they can't travel to be with family, they started it years ago and it's grown very popular and they have a ball 🙂 You might want to see who in your area can't travel and start your own tradition!

We're going to the neighbors but another thing I love to do over Thanksgiving is to go volunteer at a soup kitchen.

A few years I did that I ended up there the night before to help get stuff prepared and came in early in the morning to carve turkey, prepare the gravy and lay out all the plates and utensils. It is an incredibly rewarding experience both for the recipients as well as the volunteers. I always go home feeling refreshed and VERY thankful.

I have a couple of great friends that invite me over for Thanksgiving and Christmas on the years I can't make it home to my family. One set of friends are an awesome couple, and they usually invite a few other close friends to join us. Then my other buddy's entire family is an hour away, if we need the "real" family experience. It's funny but with us all here for the tech industry, we're basically all "away" from our families in other states, so we're all family to each other here.

Get drunk, obviously. XD But really, I don't drink that much anymore so I would probably just relax most of the day and maybe get some work done.

Since I moved to the US for college I've spent Thanksgiving and my birthday alone.

I spent Thanksgiving away from family once, so I volunteered feeding Senior citizens in a retirement home.
Best Thanksgiving I ever had.

When I was overseas, I made a Thanksgiving meal for my boyfriend and my roomates (several other exchange students from the US and Germany). I had just had my appendix removed and I wasn't supposed to do any "lifting" - our turkey was actually pretty small, but my roomies wouldn't let me do anything due to my restrictions. I was so worried it would dry out - but they helped me get it out to baste it every 30 minutes. We had dumplings, stuffing, and pecan pie for dessert! It was awesome 🙂

The few times I've been too far away to spend Thanksgiving with my family I got an invitation from friends near where I was living. 😀

i usually work that day but i still get at least some time to see them

Thanksgiving Day I work all day giving away free Dinners.

It's the Saturday after Thanksgiving that I get together with all of my friends and family. It has always worked out better that way... and the grocery stores are even open if you forgot something!
