10 most brilliant minds on film

Leave out Russell Crowe and it is quite a lisr. I watch NOTHING that he is in so I really cant comment on the character...

Possibly overlooked candidates: Will Hunting (Good Will Hunting), Tom Ripley (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley's Game), Hannibal Lechter (The Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal), "Verbal" Kint/Keyser Soze (The Usual Suspects), Josh Waitzkin (Searching for Bobby Fischer), Fred Tate (Little Man Tate).

Why in the hell isn't Sheriff Bart from Blazing Saddles on that list!?!?

Gotta knock both 007 and Indy for 'getting caught by the bad guy' in every movie. Not so brilliant.

And was Palpatine brilliant or the Jedi's plain dumb? (I mean, Palpatine is clearly Sidious with a hood on and darker voice!)

But I digress...

Good list to start the discussion with.

My only possible nominee(s) would be Mike McD from 'Rounders' or Jason Bourne (Both Matt Damon... hmm...)

I don't konw if I agree with that Wizard being number 1. But I don't watch those movies so I'm not sure... But I think maybe he's a little bias so he made him number 1 lol.. And yeah, I don't think James Bond is that smart lol... What exactly is smart about him? He's a secret agent that has been trained, but it's not like he builds the stuff he uses, or anything. And he gets cought and all this yadda yadda...

and yeah Indy, he's smart. He knows his stuff.. and well he wasn't like number 1 so I think he's okay lol..

Thanks everyone. Capnmad...I agree...Hannibal Lecter was certainly a snub! I had Will Hunting on my honorable mention that I didn't include, but the main reason I didn't include him on the main list was because he was too close to John Nash, and I went with a real life guy rather than the fictional character!

Anyway, thanks for the discussion everone and thanks for stopping by. And just a thought, sometimes it takes more brains to escape than to avoid capture in the first place!

That's a pretty good list overall, though I don't know about Sherlock Holmes being on it; besides the new one with Downey, which I'm not counting, I don't know of any Holmes movies in the last 30 years.

Another character who might have been overlooked was Doc Brown (Back to the Future movies).

A couple other glaring ommissions:

Keyser Söze - The Usual Suspects
Philip Marlowe- The Big Sleep

Also, Hannibal Lector >>>>>>>> Jigsaw

And definitely Doc Brown. Good call Dr. Violin!

yep...I'm with you on Keyser Soze too! Another one I probably should have thought of. Doc Brown did make a time machine, but he's just a little too much of a clown for me to take seriously as a great mind! Don't get me wrong. I love the (first) movie, but I just can't get on board with that one.
