a question about cigars....

i was talking to a friend on the phone..and he said you don't inhale while smoking a cigar..that if you do, you would die...he isn't talking about filtered cigars..just regular cigars...i see people smoking cigars that sure look like they are inhaling to me....is it true you can die from inhaling cigar smoke?

I don't know about dying from inhaling cigar smoke....that seems a bit far fetched (but I profess my ignorance on the facts). It would, however, be highly unpleasant. Same with pipe smoking. They are both sort of intended to be sucked into the mouth, played around a bit to savor the flavors, and then released. Kind of like chewing tobacco. It's meant to just sit in your mouth, tucked into your cheek, and do it's thing. You're not supposed to swallow it. You won't die if you do, but you're gonna be awfully damn sick for a while. I suggest you don't inhale, as others have said you breath it in and sort of let it sit for a second. Breathing it in is sort of like smoking a pack of cigarettes at once; you wouldn't die but you might see pieces of your lung coming out of your mouth.

Dear Izzy;

I've been a cigar and pipe connoiseur for many, many (entirely too damned many) years.
It depends on the size and type of cigar.

Inhaling a petit corona (about 4 inches long by a 28 ring size) of a brand classed as mild (like Te Amo or Flor De Jalapa) is roughly equal to chain smoking 5 filter tip Carlton all the way down to the filter.

Inhaling a Canone (about 9 inches long by a 60 ring size) of a brand classed as extra strong (Like Punch or Ghurka) is about as bad as chain smoking four packs of non-filtered Camels or Chesterfields all trhe way down to burn your fingers if you take one more puff territory.

If you're not used to it, either one will give you a coughing fit that will take a long time to quiet down, if you inhale them. There are all kinds of levels in between those two extremes. In general, it is a very, very bad idea to inhale cigars. I never do. It ain't macho- it's just stupid.

Well, you can still get cancer on your lips, tongue, mouth, etc.. And you still absorb the nicotine (and other substances). I'm not sure if regular cigar smokers _don't_ inhale, at least a bit. When I smoked cigars (not often) I certainly did (but I also was drunk at that time...) It certainly won't kill you, it's rather like chain-smoking a couple cigarettes.
