I was there when MTV signed on with Video Killed the Radio Star, and enjoyed the art of the music video during it's height. A lot of creativity went into those mini movies and they often added much to a song.
In recent years videos have become afterthoughts, showcases for admittedly good dancing, and the ones that are subversive and tell stories are very few and far between.
So when I see a good one, I'm always impressed.
Which brings us to Lady Gaga. Influenced by equal parts Queen, Bowie, and Madonna she has been turning out some unique music which I have enjoyed, and slowly she has been producing videos that stand out. They have a lot of hidden things in them. Homages to movies, hidden things that point at winked at topics, elements that show her respect to artists she appreciates.
And the videos tell stories. Support the music. make one think.
Below is the video for the new single "Bad Romance"
Here is my challenge. Watch it, and see how many elements you can find that have hidden information, what that is. As in what connections you see in images, motion, and look, and so forth. Of course the number of fetish buttons being stomped upon is high also. Pointing them out is fair game too.
