Absolutely disgusting!

Meh. There's going to be a pooper in every party. Such is life.

A nation with no armed forces (if there ever was one) would be a sitting target for the first armed band of thugs that came along. Some aggressive nation would undoubtedly take advantage of the chance to loot the undefended population (or do worse). No nation can exist for long without military forces to defend itself.

Those who willing to join a force to defend their own country have the potential to be heroes. Some of them are very great heroes.

Fair enough. But, name me a war that, when it comes down to it, actually WAS necessary. And don't say World War 2, because that conflict would never have arisen in the first place had it not been for World War 1 - which was completely and utterly pointless.

Let me just speak from the American point of view.

It was NOT necessary for Japan to bomb Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. After that happened, it WAS necessary for the United States to declare war on Japan and to pursue that war to victory.

What would you have done, sitting in Franklin D. Roosevelt's place, on December 7, 1941?

You can support soldiers and not promote war.

This group is meant to be a parody of this attitude. Like it or not, "supporting the troops" is a metaphor for supporting war. Reporters were just "supporting the troops" they were embedded with when they gave biased, one-sided reporting during the Iraq invasion.

It's just politically correct nonsense to say "I don't support the war, but I support our troops." I don't agree with what this group says, but I respect the fact that they're taking a stand.

Well they are entitled to their opinion....

I don't like war and fighting but I understand it exists and without soldiers we would not America, and my people would not have the country of Israel. Recently I spent some time with Israeli soldiers, and you know what, they don't want to be fighting any more then we want them to be. They are young and like to have fun and do the same things we here in America enjoy. But when the place you love is under siege you do what you have to do, be it the land of America, which I love, or Israel, my true homeland.

Just an example on my part, feel free to agree or disagree as you will.

If you don't like this country and don't appreciate what was done for you, get the fuck out!

Or go back to where you came from!

Anybody who puts their life on the line day after day is a hero.
Then we are all heroes. We get in cars and drive to work. Every time you get behind the wheel you are putting your life on the line. Extreme inturpretation yes. But true none the less.

As for the post. Though I would not join that group. They do have a valid argument not every soldier is a hero. Neither are firefighters, cops, paramedics, Nurses, doctors.... They are doing their job that is what they paid to do. There is nothing heroic about doing something you get a paycheck for. You are doing what is expected of you. Now you take an avg. person and have them run into a burning house to save a family of 5. That is a hero. A hero is someone who does something noble above and beyond what anyone would expect a normal person to do.

The word hero gets thrown around to the point it is meaningless. You know who are heroes in the military... anyone who EARNS (emphasis on earn because a lot of stars are given out for bs that doesnt warrant a medal... IE there is a V on the ribbon) a silver or bronze star or Medal of Honor or DSM.

I respect people who volunteer to be in the military. I have the up most respect for them. I do not worship them like they are heroes. My grandfather was in the marines did two tours in Korea, walked away with 2 purple hearts a silver star and NMCM. he will be the first to tell you he is not a hero and only did his job.

At what point in the article does it say that we don't need soldiers or a military?

You're taking what I said and blowing it out of context , you knew what I ment .

So what is you're point ? Soliders are heros *the majority of them , there are some bad ones ou tthere that arn't *

No. I just said you are not automatically a hero when you put on the uniform! That's what it means! You actually have to do something heroic to become a hero!

Ok then that I agree with but soliders who go to an active combat zone a number of times are heros .

I don't know. My grandfather was in Russia during WWII. Does that make him a hero? Probably not, because he was marching after the historically wrong flag!

Also soldiers have little control over how often they're sent into combat zones. Some want to but can't, others go in and take the first chance to get out of there. It seems weird that a person's "hero" status is dependent on the decisions of other people.

Anyway, I don't think Rhiannon was comparing the US the Communist Russia. She was just pointing out the fact that generalizations don't apply in this scenario.

It doesn't matter if it's risking your life for something, being a soldier, or being a soldier in combat. What makes a "hero" shouldn't be decided by criteria no matter how inanely specific. There's nothing wrong with respecting people for those things, but relegating them to hero status based on that and and nothing else only serves to degrade the significance of the word.

Thank you Fire Sprite, I really feel understood by you! 🙂

Oh shut up . Are you really gonna sit there and play that game ?

If you were talking to Rhiannon, she brings up a good point...

Were German soldiers "heroes" in World War II?

Would it have been right for the German people to have said "support our troops" even if they were opposed to the war?

Saying "soldiers are heroes" is the politically correct way of not having a debate about whether what your country is doing is right or not. That's not a good thing.

They actually did say that. If they didn't, they didn't live very long!
