NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan — as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, `You're crazy,' my parents were like, `Come on, you have to eat.'

My friends flooded me with emails and calls to my office. I could not believe them and then saw it all over the internet and just checked it out on the news at home.

I am heart-broken and confused, his performance as the Joker was going to be mind-blowing... I am heart-broken to see the movie, knowing Heath will never be back. Confused on how a young 28 year old with a child and his career now shooting upward could kill himself... if those pills found were him overdosing.

RIP Heath 🙁

DK

This is truly one of the most tragic things I've ever heard. I had been just getting up from a nap when I heard this news. Was lying down due to a headache. It's one of those things that you have difficulty believing at first. Then, when I cleared my head. It hit me. Brokeback Mountain. Heath Ledger is dead? At 28? It cant be. Then you read it again, and are like OMG. How, truly, truly devastating.

R.I.P. Heath.

Mitch

im quite simply gobsmacked, brokeback mountain was a truly fantastic film, and i was genuinely ecstatic when i found he was playing the joker in the dark knight...truly gutted

Sad to hear, a very good actor. CBS News just did the story about his passing......and they showed Heath's "Joker" from the upcoming Batman movie. It's weird, his Joker looks similar to "The Crow".

I certainly must say I was shocked, I just got online and checked the AP wires for the latest news, and saw this as the top story.
While it is awful that a person with so much going for him would die so young, so have many others before him, and unfortunately so many others after him so yes it is shocking but I put things into this perspective; that no matter what your status, how much money you have, or how popular you are.....death knows no boundaries.
It saddens me more thinking about the little one he left behind.......

I will remember him later on tonight by watching "The Patriot" the movie I thought he acted best in.

RIP

Rob

It is a huge shock to hear about his death. When I saw the headline, I thought no freaking way.

It's a sad thing to see such a talented star die so young, especially if it's because of a drug overdose.

It is sad to know that his daughter will grow up not knowing her father. 🙁

I did hear about this on the news and it is very sad. I also think this thread should be in the General Discussion section. Anyways, it is a shame and hope his family will be okay in time.

Wow...

I'm the kind of person who normally can speak in almost any situation, but this is one of the few times in my life where my exact thoughts are "What?... Really?... no way... Wow".

To a truly talented young actor and probably the James Dean of our generation. Such is the nature of beauty...

"GO, lovely Rose—
Tell her that wastes her time and me,
That now she knows,
When I resemble her to thee,
How sweet and fair she seems to be.

Tell her that 's young,
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died.

Small is the worth
Of beauty from the light retired:
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herself to be desired,
And not blush so to be admired.

Then die—that she
The common fate of all things rare
May read in thee;
How small a part of time they share
That are so wondrous sweet and fair!"

May he rest in peace.

Some of all of the above -- "What, no way --"
"no freakin' way"
"one of the most tragic things I've ever heard"
"gobsmacked,"
"truly gutted"

and I didn't even realize until today he was the Joker, didn't recognize him or read reviews, yes agree with T-D Drew he there looks like the Crow, sadly, appropriately, couldn't believe the news when I saw it,
I don't believe he won't be around to hear the reviews,
the applause and the foot-stamping.

Either way, especially if suicide, OMG what a horrible freakin' WASTE.
People do not realize just what "permanent" is sometimes, I hope this was an accident, not over a breakup he'll never be able to fix now...

Amazing talent, seemed like a nice person, the beauty was irrelevant, the child is more tragic, and the ex. I am so very sorry for him and his family.

Another quote: "Rest in peace, Heath"

i am in complete, utter shock. he was one of my favorite actors. falling in love with him when he played in "a knights tale" i was also taking a nap and when i woke up i opened my browser and it was the first thing i saw. my immediate reaction was WHAT THE FUCK. i began saying oh my god over and over and began to cry. he was an amazing actor and one i truly admired. he will be very much missed and it was a GREAT loss in hollywood.

RIP HEATH <33333333

Drew

Yeah he does look very Crow like and spookily enough, dying at the same age as Brandon Lee who was the Crow

Damn

I was at work and my roommate texted me the news. I'm going to see the dark knight as much as possible now. This sucks.........

it is a damn shame he left so young. right now, the speculation goes like this:

in his newest role as Joker in the Dark Knight movie, Heath was reported saying that the role had worn him out, and he had difficulty winding down and sleeping. my guess is that Heath embraced the role (Micheal Caine, who plays Alfred, said that Heath gave him chills during takes), and it affected him somewhat. some actors/tresses in the past have said similar when in a psychological role. Leonardo DiCaprio, for instance, often showed signs of OCD during and after filming for The Aviator, when he played Howard Huges.

so, this is a case of terrible insomnia that Heath attempted to quell by over-dosing on sleeping pills. it's a sad end to what could have been a much more glorious career and future for such a young man.

Another selfish moron gone who only cared about his own dumb ass and didn't give a damn about his little girl who loved him, depended upon him and called him daddy.

It would be good if the same thing would happen to the other 100,000,000 moronic weaklings in this country who can't get through the day without putting heroin or crack cocaine or meth or whatever into their bodies and destroying themselves and people around them.

If people want to mourn, go ahead. I say good riddance.

though everyone is entitled to their opinion, at least have your information right. as i said in a previous post, Ledger had been having stress and sleep issues, and (as far as we know, though nothing else says otherwise) over-medicated on prescription sleeping pills. i seriously doubt this was a case of using illicit, illegal drugs. instead, it was over-dosing in an attempt to finally get some rest.

There's been news that he has been recently diagnosed as having pneumonia as well- so if if he had that and was taking sleeping pills there may be a problem (ie.not being awake enough to cough up mucous or fluid that would accumulate in his respitory track).

That's the "SPIN" version now. No doubt the real story will surface in a few days.

So Sad

Though I refuse to watch any of his movies since he played that ****** the guy had some talent and it's sad to see one die so young. The real sad thing, if you read his latest interviews he didn't appreciate his own work as much as the public did.

though the harshness of your words are totally uncalled for, i'm glad to see you feel some sympathy.

cloud,
just imagine if this thread were about a rapper that died in the same way... the words in this thread would be harsher....and a lot more of them as well.

I had not heard that socks....
if true it would explain a lot, drowning in ones own fluids....sad.

That's sort of a cop-out from the palpable bigotry, not to mention blatant stupidity of someone actively avoiding an actors work because of the sexual orientation of a fictional character he portrayed.

I did not defend the statement made, I merely pointed out that in another instance the words would be harsher and more of them.
That was it, but perhaps that would be suited better for another thread, not changing the subject in this one.

I didn't think you were defending him. 🙂

I actually agree that a rapper dying would bring in just as much if not more harshness. But you have to admit, often times they do have a sketchy past.
