Now that the 2018 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame has been announced, Adam Schefter was reporting on who might make it in 2019. Now, I love Adam Schefter. He is one of the most insightful, knowledgeable football analysts out there.
But, he started his report with "When it comes to the class of 2019, you have to start with Tony Gonzalez, the former Falcons' tight end . . ." HUH??!!
Sure he played for the Flacons for the last five years of his illustrious 17 year career, and played in the NFC Championship game with them following the 2012 season.
The reason he is touted as being a first ballot Hall-of-Famer in the first place is because of his play in his 12 year stint with the Chiefs, where he set NFL records for receptions, touchdowns and receiving yards for a tight end. In fact, he was one of the first to revolutionize the tight end position as primarily a pass catching position, too big for defensive backs to cover and too fast for linebackers.
Yes, he had success as a Falcon, but he is going into the Hall of Fame for what he did with the Chiefs more than what he did for the Falcons.
