Hey gang!
For those who are interested in helping people out, here's some info. (Those who don't feel these folks need/deserve/whatever our help, please stay out of this thread. It's not for debating. It's for helping.)
Here's the poop. I got thinking about what we were doing for Joby with getting info. out about what her shelter needs that they weren't getting. (I've been contacting businesses and stuff in addition to posting here.) It occurred to me that, if we can do that for her shelter, other folks can do the same for other shelters.
So, what I've done is begun a program called "Adopt-A-Shelter". What it will do is to pair up contact people from our group with a contact in each shelter. Every week, we would check in with our contact people to see what they might need that isn't getting to them. Then, we'd turn around and make some calls to help line up groups and businesses to donate goods and get them to those shelters. As we go along, I hope to have people signed up and ready to be called.
There'll be several aspects of the program. But, what we need the people most in at the moment is acting as a contact for a specific shelter. I just started this up a couple of days ago. So, it's still in the development stages at the moment. I'm scrambling to get sponsors and business partners lined up and have written to Ellen and Oprah about promotions to get the word out to others who want to help. By the time I get whatever permits I need from our attorney general's office (hopefully by week's end), we should have enough lined up to jump in running.
I'm in the process of developing the site for this now and hope to have it up, at least in part, by tomorrow evening.
If this sounds like something you'd be interested in helping with, let me know and we can talk about more specifics.
Ann
