I have to tell you. I honestly thought that someone wanting to save a dog from being put to sleep would be happilly introduced to a waiting doggy. But in cincinnatti it would proabably be easier to adopt a f-ing kid. I have the volunteers at a local shelter looking over my prefile to see if they want a certain dog to come home with me since its the favorite dog in the shelter. Im getting impatient with these people. I mean come on, if the dog is so great why dont they take it home or why hasnt someone else picked it up yet? Is it because they are turning every person interested down because they like it so much? Christ.

Can you tell im slightly perturbed? Anyone else have such problems adopting a dog from a fricking shelter? I understand they want a good home, but i think i more than qualify. Ughhh.

I don't really post anymore, actually I don't really read anymore, unless asutickler points it out to me. This is one he pointed out to me.

He wanted me to see it because he thought maybe I can help you feel a little less "perturbed" since I used to work at one of the shelters here as an adoption counselor.

There are many reasons why there is now screening in the adoption of animals, especially in larger cities. Dog fighting and animal abuse/neglect is an ongoing problem that we've been trying to minimize for many years. In our shelter, we attempted such through applications, discussions, and public education. Our requirements are considered minimal compared to many shelters across the country. We tell people coming to the shelter to plan on spending at least 2-3 hours there while completing the process. Our process involves choosing an animal, providing the person is "qualified" for the animal (doesn't have any animals or kids at home that will conflict with the animal's needs, or has the "habitat" necessary to care for the dog) filling out an application. They spend 30+ minutes with a counselor, going over the dog's profile, our programs and what is offered with the adoption, and going over the different ways to deal with things that will, or could, occur with the dog. During the entire process, we are talking to the applicants, and asking questions. Only if they "qualify" and agree to the terms of the adoption, can they take the dog home.

To many, it seems extreme and unnecessary, but that is because they don't understand the reasoning behind it. So what are the reasons? To prevent any abuse or mistakes while caring for the animal, to help them to train the animal and deal with any issues appropriately, to educate them and allow them to see warning signs of illness and how to care for their dog medically, and most importantly, to prevent injury and death.

I'm sure everyone thinks the last reason is never going to happen. My response, you wish. While working at the shelter, we had many dogs returned because the adopters lied about having a cat, when they knew the dog didn't "like" cats (we provided this information to the adopters). The end result, their cats were badly injured, or killed. Also some of the dogs we had didn't like kids, someone would lie about having kids, or wouldn't listen on how to handle a dog unfamiliar with kids, and someone would be bite. We've even had dogs adopted out that killed the adopter’s dog because they lied on their applications. Seems stupid huh, but there are reasons for everything.

So to answer your question, yes, I have seen people have that much trouble adopting a dog. I have turned down people for animals, either because they didn't qualify, or because I caught them lying.

So something to ask the volunteers, what types of issues does this dog have? It could have food aggression, not like kids, dogs, cats, etc. It could be a neglect case, or an abuse case. Any of these things can become a very big deal within a matter of minutes if the wrong move is made. It doesn't make the dog bad, or keep it from being a favorite. I had to euthanize one of my favorite dogs at the shelter, and I hated it, but he just wasn't adoptable.

To summarize, it's done to minimize animal abuse/neglect, to keep the dog from being returned, and for safety reasons. Just ask them questions, they will like that you are interested in the dog. Being indignant will likely get you turned down, and that obviously isn't what you want. I wish you luck.

Thanks alot, seriously. But so far they have answered my questions, the dog is great with kids, mild manered and no food aggretion. She is nutered/spayed, up to date shots and also crate trained, and house broken. They know i cared for a dog for 15 years, from a puppy to old age, and to my dismay in 1998, death from old age. So they know i took care of that dog. And i provided the phone number of my old vet. Just frustrated i guess that i have to jump through such hoops. Im sure i could provide a better home than a shelter can.

So what exactly would you suggest i do/ask/say that would make me stand out as a good choice?

I know you are frustrated. It's normal. But my advice is this:

1-Be patient, having a quick temper will only show that you won't be patient with the dog either. (not saying it's true, just a possibility)

2-Ask them what you can do to help the process, and if there is anything else they need, or if there is anything you need to know about the dog.

3-Be open, listen to what they have to say and be willing to go with the flow.

4-Do what's best for the dog. Make sure you are ready for the dog, before it comes home.

5-Ask them about the process, and what is left that needs to be done.

I don't know what their process is, but all of the above can only help you, even if you don't get this dog and want another. I can't really tell you what they are waiting for, or wanting, since I don't know the whole story. Good Luck

I'm in West Chester, which is about 15-20 minutes from Cincy. I have tried to adopt dogs. Since I'm phsycotic and depressed I have no patience for the dumb asses at the shelter home and finally gave up. I currently own a dog, and a cat, both of which I bought. My suggestion- Unless you really love this dog, just go and buy one.

Dumb asses? Why, pray tell, would the action of being concerned about the welfare of an animal rank someone as a 'dumb ass'? I think it's pretty darn commendable, and I'm glad they are so careful and throrough about who they let walk out of the shelter doors with one of the animals. What if they weren't? Can you imagine that poor dog that gets rescued from an abusive home, only to be adopted into ANOTHER one because the shelter did not thoroughly investigate the background and history of the adopter?? The very thought brings tears to my eyes. The animals who are at the shelter have gone through enough already...they deserve a happy, warm, loving home and it's up to the councelors at the shelter to make sure they get one. Kudos to them.

And the whole point of getting a pet from a shelter as opposed to buying one is to save the life of an animal and give them a second chance they may not have otherwise. If you truly love animals, I would think this would be the first route you'd take. (and we won't get into the dangers of buying an animal from a pet store with the mass breeding and puppy mills....sick, sick, sick)

Hang in there, yj. Just remember they love that dog every bit as much as you will if you get to adopt it, and they are only looking out for it's best interest. It will make the reward of being that dogs new loving owner that much more precious.

Well good news for me and the american bull dog im trying to adopt. I got an email back from the staff of the shelter telling me that they all unanimously voted in favor of having me come in to see the dog to find out if after meeting her i would want to take her home. Theya actually said they were excited that someone like me has showninterest since im so active and they say "strong" enough to handle the muscular dog. So this thursday evening at 6 pm i get to go meet her. So quite possibly by sunday i will have a new roomy. Still very irritating at first. But I do understand not wanting the dog to come back or to go to a crumy home. And yeah, the point was to save a dogs life.

Congratulations, yj! I hope this all has a very happy ending for both you and the precious pup in question! Sounds like it will all be worthwhile after all.

American bulldog? Oh how cool! I ADORE bulldogs! One of my absolute favorite breeds.

If you're psychotic and depressed, they're hardly "dumb asses" for being reluctant to deliver some poor creature into your care. Quite the opposite, in fact...

Hey, I am totally for the screening process. The dog that I have now was adopted out to a psychotic ex boyfriend of mine who thoroughly screwed her by doing awful things like beating the crap out of her until she had hemorrages in her eyes. If he had been properly screened maybe she wouldn't have had to go through that. I'm just glad I got her in the end. I'm still working through the emotional trauma she suffered from that. Applause for those who selflessly care for animals because they can't always protect themselves!

I know it must be frustrating, and unexpected for most wanting to adopt from a shelter. However I have always thought (here come the flames) that the privilege of having an animal should be handled just as seriously as the adoption of a human. Some people are good to their pets and I'm sure you are one of those people Yj. Unfortunately like so many other facets of life, a few idiots can make it harder for good folks to take these animals into their homes. I know it's a pain, but it's just so much better safe than sorry, there are so many people that have no respect for animals. Good luck Yj, once you get your "baby" home, you will look in those eyes and understand exactly why she deserved that special consideration. She'll be worth it.

Well because Mimi. If they check it and say it's all fine but they need more time. Then I think that means they don't like the person and ARE LOOKING for a reason not to give him the chosen pet.

Well, tonight after work, i have to go home and change, i was told i might get some paw prints on me. I get to go meet who i will call "Tammy." And see if i pass their screening process. So far after what they have told me its more or less a formality. We just have to see how the dog reacts to me. But i have my crate already and a fellow tmf'er as my vet! Thats cool too i think. If a guy cant find tickling here than at least i can find a vet. And kitten. I agree with you, but since i didnt ask for any gross descriptions of dog beatings, start telling that story in another thread, i dont want to read about it here, its not on topic i should say. Adopting a dog is, not me or anyone beating a dog. Thanks for your understanding.

Sorry yjgfn... but I was only intending to make a serious point of why they screen and what might happen if they don't I still think it was perfectly on topic.

yjgfn, Kitten was only elaborating on what was already discussed by Mimi and the others. There are gentle and kind dog owners and there are those who are abusive. The pet agencies need to weed out the abusive ones and that takes time. Don't take it personally. And apologize to Kitten. She was just trying to give you the benefit of her experience.

Kittens reply is completely on topic. Not a pleasant tale, obviously, but one that happens all too frequently and one that needs awareness. It's also one of the prime reasons they have such a heavy screening process in place. A necessary and beneficial evil.

Please remember folks that if you feel a post is made off-topic, report it to the moderators and let them decide. That's what we're here for. Starting a thread does not give you the right to dictate what can and can not be posted within it's pages.

I dont benefit by someone telling me they have poor taste in men.

I thought that is somewhat the point? I guess we will agree to dissagree since all your going to do is twist what im saying. Im done addressing a poitnless battle.

Kitten is a dear friend of mine so I consider her taste in men to be quite extraordinary. She, like myself and presumably yourself, have had bad experiences in life which only serve to make us better people in the long run if we learn from them. There's no need to make rude remarks like the one you just made. I think you owe her an even bigger apology now.

Sorry, Moderators, but I had to make my feelings known.

No one else appologises for an opinion. And im not for mine.

John Lennon apologized for his, "The Beatles are bigger than Christ," comment. It's no sign of weakness to apologize... it shows you've got a heart.

Not at all, just shows i have nothign to be sorry for. And i dont need aproval from you or anyone else. People who know me are what counts. And if you dont and form your own opinion then i really dont care. I am not one who cares what others say or think about me. Bottom line. Im going to get back to my pup now. Go find something to do with yourself today.

ok, everyone put your keyboards down and back away slowly. If you're going to start talking about each other instead of pet adoption, please take it to pc.
