An unusual run of luck

Events of the past three weeks:

On an early morning walk, I happened to glance down to see a five dollar bill lying on the sidewalk. One of my best morning warm-ups, right there.

A few days later, strolling around the corner to a convenience store, I noticed a small roll of bills on the walk. It turned out to be a twenty and two ones nestled together. Twenty-two bucks. Awesome, right?

Two or three mornings later,.... on the regular morning walk, and now always keeping my eyes trained steadfastly on the pavement, I spotted another folded-up bill in the rain gutter. But I nearly fainted when I unfolded it far enough to see that it was a fifty dollar bill. What the hell was going on, here?

But folks, this little run of luck had not yet reached the "Ripley's" proportions,... at least not until a couple of days ago when a neighborhood landlord asked me to take a look at a roof leak in an old 4-story Victorian home which had been converted to apartments. (I'm a former contractor) Well over a hundred years old, it was unoccupied and easily as dusty as one of those movie caves frequented by Indiana Jones. But I dragged myself into the attic to trace the origin of the leak,... found it,... and knelt down to follow the trail through the ancient floor boards,... below which a ceiling was leaking. The boards were loose and, when I shifted one to get a better look, I discovered a genuine 1897 US twenty dollar gold piece between the ceiling joists. A Liberty and, judging from its near-perfect condition, it had been lying there since the old building was new. Finders, keepers, in this case. Appraises at around $2,300, give or take (according to some website I checked).

Seriously,... nothing like this has EVER occurred for me,.... I found a dollar bill in the 4th grade,.... that's IT.

Amazing, finding such an old coin like that. The most cash I've ever found at once is $150. I've found $10 and $20 bills a few times, and knew a guy who found a money order for $250 that had not been filled in.

$150 cash is an amazing find, Bugs,........ and to be fair about this "luck" business, I have to confess that I once LOST about $300 cash when I apparently dropped my wallet at a nightclub and, while the wallet was waiting for me at the club's office the next day, the $300 was not.

I had another unusual "find" once -- of the non-cash variety -- it was a diamond ring. Genuine. Found it on the floor of the (gulp) Richmond Greyhound Bus Terminal, so I handled it with care until I could sterilize it. Not a great ring, though,...... a couple hundred dollars. I also once found a .32 revolver in good condition while walking in the woods,...... oh yeah, that led to all sorts of speculation.

That's why I've never carried much cash on me.

A few hundred bucks is not bad for a random find. Finding a weapon in the woods like that would make one wonder, no doubt.

Rats, the most I ever found was a $20 bill lying on the grass in Central Park.

That coin could be worth FAR more than you think, depending on its condition... Get it graded by a trustworthy professional, and handle it with the utmost care until it can be sealed into a holder. If it's truly in a near-flawless state, you may have something worthy of a Sotheby's auction.

Hey, thanks man,........ I checked out the site you forwarded, however the coin does show signs of having been handled and in circulation at one time,.... not "mint" or flawless condition by any means. It is simply fresh-looking and unworn. But I will look into it, have no fear,... and I am being very gentle with it.
