well now that i am in week three of the program with chantix, i think it's finally showing some results..last night after taking my second pill of the day, i smoked a cigarette about an hour later..my stomach was empty, and as i smoked the cigarette, it seemed to aggravate that emptiness, and i began coughing..well then i had to fight like the devil to keep from throwing up..how does one throw up on an empty stomach??? and today i've had practically no desire to smoke..maybe had three all day, which is something, considering i usually smoke fourteen cigs a day..it's a constant fight with nausea, however, which doesn't thrill me..but i'll keep with it..that and an increasing hungriness, which i will do my best to ignore..i'm thinking that because the drug is blocking the nicotine from the pleasure part of my brain, that i'm feeling more hungry than i did before..and that isn't a good thing, but i'll continue to fight that and maybe have a few crackers if the emptiness becomes too much to handle..so looks like in another week or more, i'll maybe not be smoking at all...given my other health issues, that will be a good thing..like i said, the only side effect for me is a continual nausea, which abates in time..

WOW I sabeau......I'm sure you know how good it is to quit smoking. I LOVE hearing of folks willing to endure to quit. Is the medicine designed to cause nausea when you smoke...or is it a side effect?...either way, that in itself is a good reason to not have to take the meds anymore.....Good luck I sabeau!

You're going the distance and succeeding admireably Izzy! Not many people can say that about themselves. Congratulations my friend 🙂 Stick with it, you're doing great!

Congratulations Izzy you are doing very well. I know you can do this. I will pray for your continued success. :redheart:

try snacking on fruits or peanuts and drink lots of water when you get hungery.. it helped a lot for me when i was hungry and didn't want to gain weight.. i went from almost a pack a day to nothing, cold turkey.. suprising i didn't get many of the cravings i thought i was going to get.. haven't touched one since, been 2 1/2 years..

Actually, if nausea is a deliberate side effect of the medication, then I have to agree with it. It's an extra incentive. It worked Pavlov's classical conditioning experiment, why not with this?

Good show, IZ.

Keep going sweetie!

One tactic is to break the meals you would normally eat into a bunch of small snacks, same total amounts of the same foods, but consumed as let's say 3 snacks one hour apart instead of one breakfast or lunch. That can help fight the empty feeling without gaining a lot of weight.

Not smoking will mean living longer. A lot of us would prefer to have you stay around as long as possible. :smilestar :triangle:

I hope that you can stick with it and quit smoking for good, dear Isabeau. 😀

Good going, Isabeau!!!! Appreciate the update and all the recommendations by others on this thread so far. I'll be joining the "quitting" club very soon myself so can use the advice! Hope that the nausea abates as the cravings do!

Keep going,Isabeau!

Thanks for the update! I`m so proud of you!I know you will succeed!
Like you,my co-worker has really cut back on her smoking. She is starting to experience the nausea, and has complained of bad dreams, but as she says, even these are nothing compared to the effects of smoking. She hopes to have her last cigarette this Wednesday. :happyfloa

Hang in there,Isabeau! You are almost there! As Mastertank says,we all want you to be here for a long time!

We`re pulling for you,Isabeau! :twohugs:

Good luck

reminds me that I need to quit as well, but the last time I tried I held out for about 5 minutes and then decided to quit quitting 🙁

keep up the fight izzy, it may not be easy but it is definitely worth it. it takes alot to quit something like that. and always remember you have a huge support network right here for you on the TMF..... 🙂 🙂 🙂

thanks guys for the support..i have to say however if i had known that nausea would actually be a part to help quit smoking, i would have thought twice about starting the med..but too late to go back now..

and Cloudgazer, i don't actually want to quit, i need to quit..why is something you enjoy so much, so bad for you? why was tobacco even created?

well another update..i've lost the craving for them..i went all afternoon without smoking one cigarette, until just now..wow..and i didn't miss it either..this drug is a miracle for those who've tried other options and failed..going cold turkey used to work for me, however they have made cigs more addictive..

I'm glad it's working. Just be sure you STAY away from them after you quit!

o don't worry...the urge gets less and less, and the nausea gets more and more..yuck..i will definitely stay away from them...thanks..

Hi Isabeau,

Congratulations on your success so far, I enjoy hearing about people giving it their all to try and quit smoking. 4 years ago this month I quit smoking, I smoked for 17 years..

I liked Chuck D's advice about drinking water..it helps while trying to break the hand to mouth dependency that smoking creates.

Keep it up..

hey tckleguy...thanks...i have to drink water while taking the pill, so since i take the pill twice a day, that's at least two glasses of water..

and congrats yourself on quitting ..

well i'm about through with cigarettes, and it didn't take that long..the craving is less and less, the most craving happening in the morning..i can't deal with this nausea, smoking ain't worth it..so hm who knows..in a day or so, i'll probably not be smoking at all.. wtg me lol..i'm actually proud i stuck with this, seeing as how it makes me suffer a bit..

Glad to hear it!

thanks..i never thought i could actually do it..but more than ever, each time i smoke a cigarette, especially in the afternoons or evening, these waves of nausea come and don't go away unless i drink a diet seven up...smoking ain't worth fighting this nausea, which makes the drug a very smart cookie..

Congratulations, Isabeau, I'm very glad you're eliminating this unhealthy habit. 😀

Mils and Ebunbury..thank you both...i'm not doing anything to be proud of actually..because if i could be proud, i would have been able to fight this cold turkey, instead of having to rely on meds..if that makes sense lol...those who find strength to fight this terrible addiction by going cold turkey are to be truly admired...but heck every little bit helps..
