Ancient weapons-What's your favorite?

wow...some great responses among us! who would have thought so many people would have their own personal armory? some impressive collections, too.

Good point, and I didn't even mention the firearms, crossbow, longbow, throwing blades, or armor, either!!

Oh, BTW, The British soldiers that were slaughtered in Africa were killed by the Zulu nation, not the Masai. Zulu have a long tradition of warriors. But I agree, if they had had a cow catapult, they would have been fine, unless the Zulu had a large wooden badger......

Oops. Apologies, apparently the "white man's burden" doesn't extend to remembering the names of the people who kicked the shit out of his ancestors ^_^. I'm sure British "ingenuity" (well, Scottish ingenuity and the English talent for exploiting/ usurping it) would have countered the wooden badger in time. Some form of exploding pie, perhaps, or a curiously large dog.

I'm really a fan of the dead livestock in the catapult approach. I wanna chuck some carcasses at my neighbors too!

...elderberries?

Canister. Great anti-personnel weapon. Kind of like a can, filled with metal balls. When fired from a cannon, all those metal balls would find their target...you'd knock out like eight or nine marching enemy troops in one fell swoop...

Grapeshot could be nasty, too.

sounds like the beginnings of the Bouncing Betty, a nasty little anti-personnel mine.
now, i like greek fire myself. stuff burns so hot, and is so combustible. great way to scatter ground forces.

That would be the best blade ever made for combat the katana. I watched on tv how one guy in japan made one it takes a lot of time, effort, and skill. The blade is made of 2 kinds of metal to make it both strong and sharp. It is also lighter then other swords used in battle so it can strike faster.

Does it have to be real...

...cause I really dug the 3 bladed sword Lee Horsely used as Talon in "The Sword and the Sorceror" (SP?). I think Talon is cooler then Conan, his movie just had less funding.

Great Movies, but the British didn't do too well down there.

BTW< I own a Masai Spear and an Short hafted Assegai, along with about 40 other weapons, spears, blades, axes, maces, etc. No clue what my fave would be tho. several are handy and I am decently proficient with them.

Always gotta be prepared for the Zombie invasion, you know.

Decently proficient with them? You mean you get them out at home when no-one's looking, and throw them about, pretending to know how to use them?! :jester:

LOL! Seriously though, nice stash you got there. My parents have a Masai (sp) spear that they got on their honeymoon 10 years ago. It's pretty nasty!

a sweet weapon, but totally impractical. that sword holds little effectiveness in combat, and would be too cumbersome in a fight, no matter the strength of the person holding it.

LOL, Decently proficient means a little training from people who are extremely proficient, and some professional lessons. I can do some practice katas and stuff like that. In NO way am I able to use them in competition or combat, yet, but the training continues! LOL

I may be dense, but I didnt get the "white mans burden" reference in the earlier post. I wasnt trying to be rude, as I understand it, the British fought the Zulu Nation, not the Masai. Sorry if someone got offended. 🙂

Cool, I bet the katas look good. I hope you become proficient enough to use them in competition, I've seen people use them and it looks so good, so good luck to you!

I wasn't offended. People often get things mixed up!

i've always wanted to learn how to use sais. those, and three-jointed staves, are supposed to be the most difficult weapons to master. wouldn't mind learning how to use a rapier and pairing dagger as well, just fer the hell of it.

Armed and Dangerous

I like pikes myself. Nothing like a good pike line set for charge to keep your enemies at bay. We had 9 or 10' pikes (I forget the exact length) when I worked Ren Faire in San Diego.

For close quarter combat I prefer a mace. I have a beautiful, decorative, mace which I have named "bone crusher."

If it wasn't for injury and being up in my years I would consider being a heavy weapons fighter in the SCA vs. doing games.

i've considered joining the SCA a few times. that or working for the local Medieval Times in Dallas. something about being paid to swing a sword around speaks to me.

My wife and I do mediaeval reenactment, along with family members and friends. It's brill. We use all sorts of weapons, have the full armour, and have a jolly good time, what!

My stepdad is the current UK champion for the broadsword, he's pretty damn good. God have I got some memories...
