So I'm going to be washing dishes starting tomorrow at a big fancy hotel near Kings Island.

My uncle is a chef there, and he hooked me up basically. 8.50 an hour, blah blah blah.

Problem is, everybody in my family wanted me to be a server or whatever, and they are saying I can't do this dish washing job as its too hard. From what I understand, it's just a bunch of dish washing and cleaning/taking trash out, sometimes doing kitchen prep.

Either there is something physically wrong with me that I'm not aware of, or they're blowing smoke up my ass.

Thoughts?

I don't get pay at home either. 🙁 That's why I decided it would be a good idea to make 8.50 an hour doing something that's seemingly simple.

Dishwashing is easy.

being a server is more difficult, in my opinion. I've done both.

There's much more money being a server, although I did know a women once who gave up her corporate position to become a dish washer. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I washed dishes and never thought it was too hard and I made about the same as you're making. I actually got some strange satisfation out of taking dishes covered in food and making them clean again.

I guess it depends on how busy this place is and how much help you'll get.

Serving and prep are way harder than dishwashing. Dishwashing is dishwashing, it's dead simple.

Boring as sin, though. I only ever had a couple of dish shifts when I worked in a kitchen, and even though prep and line were harder, I disliked dish the most. Very repetitive. If you can handle the monotony, though, you'll do fine.

Anyone can scrub plates clean, but can you do it fast enough to keep up with the restaurant's tempo? That's where the challenge comes in. At least, it did for me, when I was 13.

My first job was as a restaurant dishwasher. That was over 30 years ago, so I don't know how much technology has changed, but it's basically spraying dishes to get the worst of the gunk off them, then loading them into the machine and unloading them. A lot of pots and pans and giant silverware had to be done by hand, not sure how that's done now. Anyway, the only real talent that it takes is speed. You have to hustle fast, and when things are busy, you've got mountains of dishes to put through the cycle. You can do it though. Oh...and don't tickle the waitresses.

Chrisums and Flatfoot pretty much nailed it. If it's busy, you won't have time to be bored. Different establishments have different rules and procedures, but it's basically getting it done fast without breaking anything or getting cut. It's not hard or bad work, but it doesn't attract groupies, either.

During college, one of my part-time jobs was washing dishes, pots, and pans in one of the university dining facilities. It wasn't really hard, it was just boring.

Well since this place is near KI and spring break is coming up, the guy who hired me said that I'd be balls deep in shit to do. I mean, 1000 person dining room, plus upstairs, downstairs, and everything else.

I can hustle I suppose. Either way, if I can physically do the job, I'll do it. And so far nobody (aside from my family) has said something that is beyond what I can do.

I washed dishes for quite a while when I was between jobs. It's more fun than serving; you get to dick about and banter with the chefs, and you don't have to deal with any bloody customers.

Its a repetitive and very messy job. If you don't mind touching other peoples leftovers and getting the occasional squirt of garbage juice on you then you'll be fine.
and keep up on the silverware, for some reason that goes the quickest.

I hate working for food service places, I would go insane if that was the only thing i had to do. Plus you smell like grease when u get home.

I think you can do this job. You can do anything you want to. Take the money. You'll have lots of jobs in your life, and this is just one.

This thread is ooooold. I'm a Domino's delivery driver now. Much better.

This. I only did it for about 6 weeks until a retail job I'd wanted came through, but it wasn't too bad, no customers and good music on the radio and one free meal per shift. My biggest issue was not killing myself on the OMG slippery stairs down to the kitchens since I was supposed to reload the sliverware bins upstairs; that was the main reason I quit (besides the insane heat down there), I'm still amazed I never fell and really hurt myself.

My advice would be to make sure you can physically handle the job. I did it when I was in high school so it wasn't an issue for me. But you will be spraying and scrubbing constantly when it's busy. I always came out of work sweaty and smelling kinda foul

My other advice is to make friends with the cooks and servers. You're the low man on the totem pole, and when the shit hits the fan they'll usually blame you if they don;t like you
