Anybody Out There Ever Eat Fugu Before?

Fugu is the Japanese cuisine name for the poisonous pufferfish dish.

It is prepared by highly trained Japanese chefs and there are only a handful of Japanese restaurants in the United States qualified to serve it. New York has the most, 13 restaurants, and there are a handful around Washington D.C. and California where there is a huge Japanese population.

If not served properly the eater dies in a matter of hours or days. The toxins inside the fish causes paralysis and the eater dies from asphyxiation.

Have any of you out there ever had this dish before? Would you ever want to try it?

My uncle taught English in Japan for several years. He never ate fugu, mostly because a single serving cost roughly $30. He swore he'd try it only if a student bought it for him, but he never did.

I personally have never tried it, but would love to at some point. 🙂

If I recall properly, it is not in the way fugu is served that makes it deadly, it is in the preparation.
The toxins are located in specific places and if not prepared in just a specific way the toxins spread throughout all the meat.

But I still wouldn't eat it. I'm allergic to seafood.

are you recalling properly from the simpsons? 😛

I haven't tried it before but would like to someday. However most people that are poisoned from ill prepared fugu don't die, though some may not make a full recovery after the poison wears off.

I was at a conference in D.C. and one of the bros from LA ordered some. He was Japanese and had eaten it before. The negroes wanted nothing to do with a "goddamn poisonpuff fish" Needless to say, I didn't try it.
