As I get a little older, I keep thinking about stupid sh!t that I liked when I was a kid. Last night, I stumbled into finding out that an old TV show called "Land of the Lost" is now available on DVD. I'm certain that many of you will remember that one. It was an old Saturday morning show for kids.

I haven't seen "Land of the Lost" for probably over 20 years. Seeing it again, might bring back some funky memories of being a kid. Then again, it might just be stupid. Does anyone remember this old show, and does anyone own any of the DVD sets?

Marshall, Will, and Hollly.....

On a rafting expedition......

One of my favorite theme songs, and a way cool show too!

yeah where these kids fell down a water fall and came across this prehistoric land. I used to watch that show too.

If i'd made the show, I would've replaced the whiny little girl with the jungle babe from "The Lost World".

Yeah....I loved some of the ways they fought off the critters. Sooooo hoaky....but fun. I think they still show it on one of the cartoon networks at times.

Land of the Lost was written by some of the top Science fiction writers of the day, Including Ben Bova, D.C. Fontana, Larry Niven, David Gerrold, Norman Spinrad and Theodore Sturgeon. It's one of the reasons the show did so well. It was not a 'dumbed down' show.

The Pakuni language was developed by a linguistic expert, Victoria Fromkin, and followed a distinct form and style. There is a dictionary.

The crsytals and pylons worked to pre-set rules. It was all pretty well thought out.

Seasons 1 and 2 are out on DVD and 3 is announced as coming.

As to the theme... It's Marsha. Will, and Holly, on a ROUTINE expedition.

As to Holly being whiney, she was one of the first strong female characters presented on TV designed for younger people. She regularly conquored her fears and faced and overcame trials on her own. Played by Kathleen Coleman, she was pretty well cast. Here she is today (though since this image was taken she has died her hair black), she grew up well 🙂

I seem to remember a father, son, and daughter surrounded by a lot of cheap sets and toy dinosaurs

I was SO in lust with Holly...Always hoped she would endure some Pakuni tickle-test...I am SO going to hell...

I remember when I was little the sleestaks used to scare the hell out of me.

Yes, Myriads, thanks for the extra info about the show. All I can remember about LOTL was that I watched it every saturday morning so I must have I liked it at the time. But I have no idea what I'd think about it now. I did listen to some of the sound bites at the official site and it definitely brought back memories.

I'd like to catch a couple reruns of the series before I invested in any of the DVDs. They might be entertaining for the sole purpose of bringing back memories from a simplier time.

Feel free to ask any questions about the show. I wager I could answer them.

That girl grew up to be a Babe! What was the name of that little cave kid, the one with the hairy eyebrows? I liked that show better than "Sigmund And The Sea Monsters", probably because I liked that girl.

Thanks for the correction...I was losing a considerable amount of sleep over that😛
As for Holly...I still like my idea better:blaugh:

What was everybody's opinion of the newer version of the show by the Chiodo brothers?

You're on Myr. I can't think of the guy's name who built and animated the dinosaurs (And "Fred," remember THAT bird?), but I know he was an Asian fellow, and he built the critters that Jim Danforth animated in "Jack the Giant Killer." The only name I can think of is Wang Chung, and, well, that's a debaucle of another genre.

Myriads, I know you were talking about trivia questions. But did you happen to get either of the DVD sets? You sound like a real fan of the show. Seasons one and two are available now.

Hello folks,

Questions and answers in no special order.

I've not picked up the DVD's yet, though I plan to at some point. I have many of the episodes on VHS and the $120 total for the three sets is a luxury item at this point. Eventully. 🙂

The Dinosaurs that were used for all the stop action animations were designed by Gene Warren. He had won Academy Awards for his special effects on Tom Thumb and The Time Machine.

The Pakuni that you one of you was wondering about was named Cha-ka. Pa and Ta were the other two, his parents.

The Sleestak WERE scary if you were the right age. They always made an impression on younger viewers. They only came out at night, and lived in the dark tunnels of their runied city. With thier big eyes and tendency to come in packs to grab you they represented some basic stuff that scares kids. I always found them sad in a way. They were the degenerated remains of a once great race that had somehow destroyed itself living in the ruins of thier once amazing city.

Before the series ended, did they ever figure out those pylon things?

The Sean Man

The got a general idea on how to open them, and what they did, but no they never worked out how to use them correctly.

Trippy 70s kiddie shows

Oh, man, you guys are taking Me down a trippy memory lane! Sure, I remember 'Land of the Lost', however, it's not the same when it's translated into Spanish, as I had to see it, back in Puerto Rico. So 'Holly' was named something like, "Yolanda"! LOL.

I DID enjoy the crazy, unconventional visuals: the big-bug-eyed bad guys, the baby dinosaur, the big Aztec-looking pyramid, oh, and the abnormally-sized flora, like the giant strawberries and mushrooms...Anybody remember those? After watching that show as well as 'Sigmund the Sea Monster' and 'H.R. Puffnstuff' I now realize, "Man, Sid and Marty Krofft must've been smoking some PRETTY potent hash back then...". They were fun show, nonetheless.

Yes only three seasons.

Most think it was on longer because it constantly re-ran for most of the late 70's into the 80's.

Myriads

I loved Land of the Lost, especially those sleestacks....but my younger sister was terrified of them. I also admit to watching H.R. Puffn'stuff....Sigmund and the Sea Monster, and even the "Banana Splits" (yep, I'm that old...almost ancient 😀

You know why the show was called "H.R. Pufnstuf"? Because Sid & Marty Krofft were puffin' stuff!
Myriads, thanks for the info on the little cavekid with the uni-brow... Cha-ka, was it? I wonder if Chaka Khan had anything to do with that.

Who remembers "The Bugaloos"?
