Are you a good tipper?

Another good story!
I don't know if drinks are free there like they are for us here in Reno/Lake Tahoe but I always give them a dollar too~they make sure your drink is stronger! 😛

XOXO

The drinks are offered only to people who are gambling, and are free. At the time, my friend was playing blackjack for $5 a hand. Now isn't a free drink worth a $1 tip, especially when you are willing to lose $10 every time you double down on an 11, draw a 2, and see the dealer stand on 17?😀

Yep it's the same here, but they'll even come by if your playing the crappy ass nickel slots. I think it's worth it~I know people who wait forever for their drinks but the girls always run for me 😀
XOXO

It depends....but I've never given less than 15%. Usually it's 20-25%, and sometimes more.

My little sis worked as a waitress some at Olive Garden when she was in college, and I'll never forget seeing how wore out she was (would come to visit granny and myself and go sound asleep on the sofa)....but she wanted that college degree so badly, she was willing to sacrifice to get it. That's always left a lasting impression on me.

I've even upset my girlfriend a few times because I gave so much as a tip...but if the waitress/ server is a young woman working their way through college or a lady who's working her rear off to support her kids...I give all I can afford as a tip.

I have also upped my tip considerably if I was dining with my kids and they make a mess. I think to myself "God, I'd hate this to be me cleaning up this area" hence I throw in a "bonus".

Normally I tip 10-20% if the service is good. My criteria for service is basically that they are polite. I have a very close friend who;s waitressed for years, and just returned to it to put herself thru college and I know how much she depends on the tips. I ALSO know, from talkign to her, how hectic things can get in teh restaruant industry, how many things can go wrong, so unless the service is completely horrid, or the server is totally sullen and nasty, I tip generously.

My ex was a total skinflint when it came to tipping. On a $40 bil he MIGHT leave a 2 or 3 dollar tip and no matter WHERE we went always had a complaint about the service

my experience

i was a bartender, and my wife was a waitress when we met, so we have
some experience.
i always appreciated a tip no matter what it was, people dont have to
tip, its not the law. so i never complained about what i got.
the problem is alot of waitress's and waiters are the biggest f...
complainers in the world. i know this from working at several hotels
and restaurants, they think you have to tip them no matter what.
and those places that put the tip in the bill and dont tell you about
it, ill bet if you put money on the table not knowing the tip was included, how many servers would let you know the tip was in the bill
i would say 99percent would not mention it.
and remember in places in europe and japan, they dont tip, so tipping
is oblivious to them.
i was in a ice cream store the other day and thier was a tip jar out
we got to make a stand haha.

I have an issue with the fact if I go out with ym friends and I didnt like the service so i only leave a dollar or some odd cents, they will add more to their tip to make up for what I ddint put out and then tell me that Im poor

I need new people to go out woth

I learned the etiquette of good tipping when I became a waitress, during My college years.

Unless the wait person is a daft ********/prick, 15-20% is appropriate if you have excellent service. Just today I had a great, *cheap* Cuban meal where the counterperson was extremely sweet and helpful, where the bill was only $6.50--I left $2 for tip.

Yes, Europeans have no concept of tipping, which I think is a horrid attitude. I am slowly teaching My English boyfriend about the value and importance of tipping.

As far as NYC cab drivers go, I always tip $1 and loose change whilst in Manhattan, and a whole $2 when going to another borough. If I have the good grace to have a funny, gregarious cabbie (My faves are Haitians and Jamaicans!), I'll tip more. A trip to or from the airports merits $5.

I travel for a living and have looked up tipping etiquette in several situations. Without trying to sound like Emily Post, the general rule still remains 15-20%. I think I give 20-25% in most situations though. I recall a meal in Memphis a couple of weeks ago where the service was bad. I told the waitress what was wrong and left her 10%.

One situation that ALWAYS work out for me is hotel housekeeping. $3.00 and a note gets my room extra attention. Extra coffee, water, turn down service etc.

I also tend to tip more in expensive areas. New York City (where I am right now), San Fransisco, San Diego etc are such expensive places to live that I always try to tip well (it helps that I can expense this).

Some thoughts from the POV of the TMF's resident loud-mouthed limey.

Tipping is in my view, something a customer does to show their appreciation for service that goes beyond the minimum. A bit of extra politeness, perhaps putting themselves out if there's something wrong with the order, or a chef who cooks a particularly blinding meal are good reasons for tipping.

I find the practice of adding the tip straight to the bill to be highly immoral and against the spirit of the idea. I won't go to places that do that out of principle.

I find the idea that someone has to rely on the charity of customers to get by in life to be rage-inducing. (Ah Jimmikin, beware the dark side!) I have no problem whatsoever in adding a tip if I think someone deserves it (I thought about a quarter of the bill was the right amount?), but the situation as it seems to exist in America suggests it's a scam done so business owners can employ slave-labour.

That isn't true at all. Tipping is well known and often practiced, it's just regarded differently in our culture. Here it's not an obligatory practice to subsidise the cheap-assedness of resteraunt owners, but to reward someone who actually puts some effort into their job, instead of just slouching round the floor and smacking a wad of gum when they take your order (a habit that drives me nucking futs).

It's only "horrid" when viewed from the POV of your own culture.

I think they add the tip automatically because bitchy waitresses kept complaining to management that they were getting stiffed...personally if I were the owner/manager, Id see it as something wrong with the help and not the customers...kinda like a 10 billion Chinese cant be wrong thing.....
