Best lightsaber duel?

My favorite was always between Luke and Vader from "The Empire Strikes Back."

I thought the prequels were abyssmal at best and essentially one giant toy commercial. Stupid Lucus whoring out his characters like that... 😡

Yoda vs Count Dooku. There's even a question about this one?

For me, there are two that stick out. The fight between Luke and Vader in The Empire Strikes Back was a lot more than just flash. It was highly personal and it came across as such. There was a sense of desperation on Luke's part and a calm dominance by Vader that was occasional broken by Luke's underestimated skill.

I also loved the fight between Darth Maul and Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. In so many films when there are multiple opponents against one guy, they seem to hang back and take turns. Not so here. The choregoraphy of the fight, by Ray Park and fight coordinator Nick Gillard, was superb. You actually believed Maul was holding off two Jedi. Specifically, the end fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Maul was by far the best. The barely-contained anger of Obi-Wan just exploded and while it was quick...it was the best.

I would pick Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon/Darth Maul or Yoda vs Palpatine. I thought the lightsaber battles were the only things that made the prequels worth watching at all. The improved SFX and greater use of Jedi powers made them much better than the first three.

Yes, Ryan vs Dorkman is awesome!

I have to agree that Lucas never again recaptured the ironic sense pf parodying the great swashbuckling adventures that Episode IV had, the others took themselves too seriously, and Jar-Jar made humans feel about the Gungan as Klingon view Tribbles.

But for best fight, I've also got to go with Obi-Wan & Qui Jon vs. Darth Maul. The fight, the setting, the lighting, the music, all worked.

i have to agree. the Duel of the Fates made the fight scene more...evil, i guess you could say. it made Darth Maul seem more relentless and destructive, and it felt like if Maul had an MP3 player, that would have been the background music regardless.

The best, for me, was the Obi-wan/Qui-gon/Darth Maul lightsaber battle. I'm not ashamed to admit that I was rooting for Darth Maul even though I knew Obi Wan had to survive. The choreography and effects were great, plus there was the bonus of knowing that they were actors, not CGI effects. For that reason, the Yoda/Dooku and Yoda/Palpatine fights tie at second. Again, you know that Yoda (and Palpatine) can't die, but they were still tense and well done.

I didn't really think the lightsaber fights in the old movies were especially well done, either in tension or effect.

Retern of the Jedi...

Im not the biggest fan of Return of the Jedi, I've always thought Empire Strikes Back was the best of the best 3 film. However the duel at the end was the best fight of them all. It's sort of like the Star Wars equil to Ricky Steamboat vs Randy Savage at WrestleMania III. Sure there have been faster matches, with bigger bumps, but the shear story behind it, and the dramatic finish makes it the best match ever. Same holds true for this Light Sabre duel, when Luke toses that Sabre aside and says "...I am a Jedi, like my father before me..." Thats what it's all about baby, take your CGI and shuv it.

in terms of choreography, the lightsaber duel between Qui gon/Obi wan vs Darth Maul is by far the best. i watch that scene over and over again. from the beginning, when Maul first ignited his double blade, all the way until Obi Wan "won", that duel is fantastic.

as for emotional, the Vader vs Luke duel in Return of the Jedi stands out. like Slavertickler mentioned, the line "i am a Jedi like my father before me..." was definitely a classic line and the battle itself was pure raw emotion.

what made all the battles great was definitely the background music. Duel of the Fates is my all time favorite....

....

If you're a big brother then there is also the conection to Luke when Vader says "Sister, you have a twin sister, Obi-Wan was wise to hide you from m,e. If you will not be turned then perhapes she wiil." Father or not nobody messes with my baby sister, she's the only thing that keeps me as close to noble as I am... Imagine what I'd be like with out her... :wowzer: it chills the soul.

Honestly?

Luke vs. Vader in the EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

No matter how many times the scene has been lampooned by various comedians, there is still something very ominous in the way Vader says "No, Luke. I...am your Father.

Best action I think is Obi-Wan vs Anakin,
Best power, though not as much action is to see the greatest Jedi ever vs the greatest Sith, Yoda vs. Sideous.
