Why is it that on Martin Luther King day, the kids get the day off from school, but on a day like Presidents day, they do not?? Am I alone on this??
I can say that there were a lot of schools who were out for Presidents' Day. Because of the amount of vacation days allotted, some school systems chose Presidents' Day, while others chose Martin Luther King's birthday for a vacation. Believe it or not, I remember NOT getting MLK Day off from school (sometimes). I moved around a lot.
I will take any holiday off I can get! BELIEVE ME! I don't give a damn what race is involved.
Let me tell you one more thing....I double majored in History and Education in college for a reason. I enjoy history emmensely, and I think culture and diversity is a beautiful thing. I also study and celebrate all cultures even down to some of THEIR holidays. Cinco de Mayo? Always have. Chinese New Year? Always have! El Dia De los Muertos and more. I encourage (which means "make" in teacher language) my students celebrate it too. This should NOT have turned into a black versus white thing.
I posted to let people know that history and culture is something to learn about, to be proud of, to be a part of, and to educate everyone about, and to celebrate. I also wanted to encourage people to not give up and to realize that words DO have power and consequences.
Blacks are not the only ones who have a portion of the year to celebrate and inform about their past and embrace their future. Latin American History is also a part of our calendar. Did you know that? Other cultures are celebrated and embraced because they WERE and ARE often forgotten and sugar coated.
But what has appeared in this thread are a bunch of misconceptions and stereotypes that are being passed along like they are reality. Frankly, I don't give a damn if you (general you) have met 2000 African Americans who blame your race for their hardships. I promise you that there are another 2000 that do not. DON'T LABEL SOMEONE (or a group) BASED ON YOUR LIMITED EXPERIENCES! And as much as people see things in the same colored glass as Zebra does, you do not have a right to dictate to me or anyone else how long and how often they can delve into their past and DISCUSS it!
Don't forget your heritage? Just don't live it everyday? Let's be realistic ladies and gentlemen. It really isn't your business unless it is causing you direct and immediate bodily harm how I choose to relive and celebrate my culture, or how often I choose to complain, praise, or express my love or annoyance on ANY SUBJECT.
Ignorance, hate, racism, elitism...have no sexual, cultural or ethnic boundaries. They can be found anywhere. Strength, love, peace, forgiveness, faith, acceptance, respect... can also be found everywhere. If you are hurt, if you feel slighted... these things happen, move on. But do not label me because of your pain. I never said any person in 2002 is guilty for slavery. I never said ALL of a certain race is the cause of me being held back. You see, you may try to hold me down, you may get in my path, you may even think you have won... but the only person responsible for my success is me.
Racism DOES exist, people do STILL get slighted, treated badly, overlooked for their race. YES in 2002, Dear, it still happens. DOES THAT STOP ME? HELL NO! I won't let anyone or anything dictate how far I will go. I will overcome REGARDLESS!!!!
This is an open forum for folks to speak their minds and "get things off their chests". Saying what you said and then apologizing to all the good hearted African Americans doesn't make what you said any less offensive, misdirected and wrong. Sometimes I just wish some of you knew, really knew how it feels to be a minority. Sometimes I wish you could just visualize it for a second, for a day. What an eye opener that would be. I think it would be a life changing experience if some guy had to find out what it was truly like to be a woman. I can empathize, but I can't truly understand what it was like to be in a Nazi concentration camp. And some of you will never understand what it is like to be black.
"Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins." ~Sharon Creech~ (I think)
Before you speak out and get things off your chest, put yourself in someone else's shoes... visualize, imagine what it is like to be in their situation. And then realize that some people complain (not just black people). Some people blame (not just African Americans), some people even give up.... But not all people! And certainly not me. Don't EVER advise me on how to be black when YOU have NEVER been there.
I was so worried that I would not be accepted in the West Coast TK community for a number of reasons, one of which was my race. My first gathering destroyed that issue. I was accepted just for who I was, who I am. It was truly a wonderful feeling.
There are some of you on TMF who have added to that feeling. You have given me joy, encouragement, advice, your opinion and the frank truth (which I do respect). There are others that I realize will never see past the color of my skin, my weight, my hair, my eyes, my outer beauty...everything that does not honestly matter, and yet is a part of me because it makes me who I am. All I can say is, your negativity, your anger and your assumptions will cause you to miss out on someone truly wonderful one day. Hell, it could even be me, who knows.
I will live my life and I will live it WELL. I hope everyone else does the same. NO REGRETS!
