Hey,

I want to go see a movie. But everything out looks like junk, trash or garbage! Anyone seen Gothika? Big Fish? Last Samuri?

I saw the Lord of the Ring movie. (Spoiler: The North beats The South)

Not interested in Bad Santa, Stuck On You, Tourqe, Elf, Love Actually (or Something's Got To Give, or anything romantic)... no Pan, no Cats w/hats.

Cold Mountain.....hmmmm, maybe. Anyone seen it? 12? Mystic River? 21 Grams? What's that scary one with Tommy Lee Jones? Okay, Stuck on you maybe

Mona Lisa Smile - video.

Oh, for Shreck 2, Spiderman 2, Kill Bill 2. Hey, what's with all the sequels looking better than some of the original stuff? Van Helsing, Phantom of the Opera.....

Well, any recommendations?

One of the very few German movies to be a success in the States is "Good-bye Lenin", a very nice and humorous satire about a family who hides the truth about communism's and the Berlin Wall's downfall from their mother. It won several international awards, and I loved it. But I don't know whether it's shown currently (or at all) somewhere near you, and the video isn't out yet.

Well, don't complain, you asked for advice... 😛

Paycheck

Definitely. Normally I have little use for pretty-boy Ben Affleck, but this was an excellent film. Plenty of action, but enough plot and romantic intrigue to make it a good date movie. Oh, and if you're in a sillier mood, and it's still playing anywhere near you, School Of Rock is a good way to spend a matinee.

I'm looking forward to The Last Samurai, LOTR, Timeline, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Santa vs. The Snowman, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Hal and Dan, very good suggestions, and I will keep them in mind (I never even knew what Paycheck was about!)

Thank you both!

I rented "Waking Ned Devine", last week, and we really enjoyed it. Very funny, interesting characters, no trendy b.s. Highly recommended.

Drew

"The Adventure of Buckaroo Banzai"

Great cast, fun movie. AND...Ellen Barkin.

go see the last samurai. you'll get a real interesting look at japanese courage and honor. forget tom cruise of course.

Nahhhh....RENT, RENT, RENT! The Adventures of Baron Munchausen by Terry Gilliam.

The Sean Man

now for something completely different 🙂

Hiya! 🙂
Your suggestions are good and you would probably enjoy all of them, but i just couldn't let the guy flicks dominate too much. 😀
A really good one if you want something different is Bend It Like Beckham (as in David Beckham - *sighs*) It's about an Indian girl coming of age in England who prefers football (soccer to you Americans 😛 ) to her family's plans for her life.
There's some great humour in it, moving romance and fine sports action on the girl's football (soccer) team.
It's been widely available on DVD for at least half a year now. A fun film that works for both your femme and masculine audiences *giggles*
Many blessings everybody,
Chickles 🙂

Saw Beckham about a month ago, and a few of the others as well. But I'm trying to get out of the house, not sit in it. Looks like Last Samurai is on my next 'to see' list.

Funny thing. Went to see Lord O' the Rings, and a bunch of nerds were in the theater. Coming out of Last Samurai at the same theater, a lot of Japanese people. Odd and funny site. Makes me wonder who will I see in The Haunted Mansion. Well, probably nobody judging from the reviews on the other hand.

Yeah, Montenegro is pretty good, too. But it ain't in the theaters. This is the problem - there appears to be so much crapola out there that no one has seen any of it to recommend it. Which is a bad sign.

Could Mountain and Last Samurai have been the most suggested, so I'll be saving my bottle caps up to go see them.

Thanks, Doc. That's a great site!

This contest is over; Dr. Kobb is the winner of the Jet Ski.

Just wanted to toss in another vote for The Last Samurai. Well-written, well-acted (even by Tom Cruise), and even culturally accurate.

Master and Commander was very well done, historically accurate, and overall a good movie... but it also manages to be quite boring at times.

Yippee! Jet Ski!! Yippee!

I love riding jet ski's! How did you know? Anyway, gladja dug the site. Their movie reviews are a hoot. Very informative and knowledgable, but hilarious, too!

It's a very creative and smart site! Not as freakishly wonderful as the Neo Nazi film review web site I found (which I'm convinced is actually written by some brilliant satirists - it's just gotta be!) but still in all Brains on Film's great site I've already sent to a friend or two.

Just so I don't put you in the uncomfortable position of asking for it ..... Horror or genius?)

K*19

"K*19...The WidowMaker" is my suggestion for now...but then I like those submarine movies.

The "Alien" series is always a good watch, especially "Resurrection", for just the wierdness of it all!

My Picks

1. Bringing out the Dead( Nicholas Cage, Patricia Arquette) .. esp for those who have lived in NYC or NJ.. awesome soundtrack too( Esp that 10 min song "T.B Sheets" that Van Morrison sings! )

2. Gangs of New York. even tho it is violent and DOES have 'Dicraprio" in it, Daniel Day-Lewis steals the picture

Almost forgot

3. The Full Monty.. tho it is a bit hard for us Yanks to understand( lol goin back to the British Slang thread) IMHO it is a hoot, and has a lot of funny moments, esp when the 6 unemployed Yorkshire steel workers are in the process of rehersing to be male strippers!

4. For those fans of Gothic, Horror and Ann Rice , Interview With the Vampire( FAIRLY true to the book) and The Queen of the Damned( supposed to be a combination of The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned , but only marginally like the 2 books).. Both movies are visually stunning, and the QOTD has some really pulsing rock when Lestat throws the ill fated Death Valley "concert cum bloodsucker barbacue" LOL. IMHO tho, Tom Cruise made a MUCH better Lestat, totally my ideal of the books character.

5. Tho totally historically inaccurate, Braveheart, for the fight scenes and cinematography

For the love of everything that is worth living for in this world...

Do NOT go see Spy Kids 3

I saw it today with my cousins... foolishly thinking that it couldn't hurt.... Well... theres quite a number of things horribly wrong with the movie... but most importantly is how bad some of the acting is.... how painful your eyes get because of the AMAZING (carboard and celophane) 3D glasses.... and especially, how the whole story seems to have been writen by 12 year old nerd because there are countless and nearly pointless references to clique game things... and each and every vital piece of information is introduced no earlier than 10 seconds before the plot requires it.

GAHH! My eyes! MY EYES! I am so happy I didn't pay for it... still, that is an hour of my life I shall never get back.

Thanks for the tip on Spy Kids 3, Pianist. I had a bad feeling about that one. Kinda liked the second one, in a cartoonish kinda way.

Oddjob--Gads! That neo-nazi site is way kooky! Unfortunately, I think it's seriously serious, yes? I read about 1/2 way through the Planet of the Apes 2001 movie review before giving-up...

Spy Kids 3. I took my young nieces to it & they liked it. I really wanted to see the cool 3-D effects (I love that stuff). But I got hardly any effect at all. Dissapointing.

The Nazi film site? I'm sure it's real, but dang, sometimes it's hard to keep a straight face during even some of the most horriffic rants.

Hey Asutickler!

Isn't that prayer from "The 13th Warrior" the greatest? I also liked the quote "Fear profits man nothing". I can't believe the movie did so badly in the theaters. I think it's one of the best action movies in my collection.

Rent 'The Pianist', with Adrian Brody.
It is awesome, informative, and also entertaining. Well worth the time!:wowzer:
