can you really not breathe when tickled too much?

Don't you have to take a breath in between laughs? and isn't breathing an automatic function of the body? Do people just think they can't breath because they are laughing so hard? It's a little confusing to me...

You've never laughed so hard you couldn't breath?

Anyway, yes, it happens. I guess if it got to a point your body would pretty much force itself to inhale, but it's incredibly unpleasant.

Yes, and this is where good pace moderation by the ler is needed, its easy to ruin a session by going over the top.

You can still breathe, but it becomes labored as the tickling goes on or the intensity increases and there are times during silent laughter where the 'lee really can't breathe.

Back in the early days of Internet tickling chat, there was a rumor/urban legend going around that the diaphragm can cramp from too much fast breathing/laughter, which would paralyze breathing function and lead to death. Maybe some medical types in this forum can confirm or debunk this?

Absolutely!! I agree with Artoo & Annie's comments. More air out than in as body's focus is on the tickling sensations.

I know sometimes just in everyday life when I am "intensly" focused on something I find myself holding my breath.

Very important to monitor my lee's breathing!!

You absolutely can. The times it's happened to me have been mostly when the ler is sitting on my back or chest and shifts his/her weight the wrong way - but that's easily remedied.

I'm pretty good at controlling my laughter *most* of the time, so I don't usually have trouble not being able to breathe. At worst it gets a little uncomfortable and distracts from the tickling, but that's also usually easily remedied by the ler letting up on the intensity just a tiny bit.

I agree, of course you can! When I get to the point when I can't stop laughing anymore, it's hard to get enough oxygen after a while. You are hyperventilating, could lead to you losing consciousness eventually!

But I have to admit that my stomach hurts so much that I need a break way before that!

Yah. Silent laughter and then those choking gasps and stuff. If it's a long session, or a ler hits a good spot you can definitely get to the point where you're having trouble breathing.

Yes, it is certainly possible to be laughing so hard that you can't catch your breath.

Entirely possible and not really pleasant at all to laugh and not be able to breath. Hence the need for breaks. 🙂

Yes, really. I haven't reached a point where I can't breathe at all, but it can be a bit dangerous to go for long periods of time without being able to take in sufficient oxygen. Sort of like the slow suffocation people experience in status epilepticus...so, safety word.

I would think making your lee pass out would not give you brownie points for trust. lol. :rules:
