I'm looking into getting a new used car. Mainly I've been looking at Cadillacs because that's what I drive currently. Otherwise I'm car-illiterate.

I'm looking for a car that would be comfortable to sit in (I'm a big person) and would have good gas mileage (gas prices suck). So I'm looking for any and all suggestions for cars.

Thanks. :bounce:

It depends on how old is "new" to you, and if you want to stay domestic or go foreign but that line has blurred a lot.

Toyota has had some problems the last few years but they have produced some of the most reliable cars in the world over the last 30-40 years. I'd also look at Honda and Nissan. If I were looking at domestic less then five years old I'd probably go with a Ford product. They have made huge strides in quality the last few years.

Do some online research. Here are a few places to get you started.

I'm looking at within the past 15 years because I only have so much to spend. Thanks, Buggy. :twohugs:

If I were looking at something in that age range then honestly I would not consider any of the old "Big Three" (Ford, GM, Chrysler). There are exceptions to most rules of course but based on my experience and that of friends and family members the Japanese were producing more reliable cars then. Buying any car that old is a gamble of course. If you can I suggest having a trusted mechanic check it out first. It might cost a few hundred dollars but can save a lot of heartache and pain down the road.

Of course. I can only go with what I can afford. When I look at cars, my dad will be with me since he's good with cars. 😀

Just get some new sled dogs. You can use them what, ten or eleven months of the year? 😛

100% agree. American vehicles have had some SERIOUS quality control issues historically, and many American manufacturers continue to have problems today. Just look at the horrendous mess that is the Chevrolet Volt, for example.

In an older vehicle, Toyota and Honda are really tough to beat. My folks have gone through many, many Toyotas (mostly Camrys) over the years, and they've all performed amazingly, even when once they crossed the 200,000 mile mark. If I was looking for a transportation vehicle in the 10-15 year old range, Toyota would be my first choice.

As the others have said, look for something Asian- Toyota or Honda preferably. Also, VW is a very strong car here in Europe, but I don't know how good the American equivalents are 🙂

Buy a VW in the US and you'll not know whether to shoot yourself or the VW dealer! I couldn't get one off the lot before the head gasket blew (with both of my young children inside). Gee, that was a fun time........:sarcasm:

If you're going older car, I'd suggest either a Toyota or a Ford. I owned three older Ford vehicles and only one gave me grief. I had a Ford Escort that I couldn't kill (until I sold it to my niece--she's hell on a car). Now I'm a big mama myself and the Escort was just fine for me and the kids.

If you don't want to go Escort, get an Explorer Sport; it's a SUV but not nearly as big as the others and it's decent on gas too.

Good luck in your search.

Your six cylinder cars are giving good gas mileage, plus they are roomy.

Something like the Impala may work...I had one and got it up to 170,000 miles...it's pretty roomy and rides like a larger car, and the highway mileage was a respectable 29 or 30 (though lower in cold weather like you get in the winter). I'll likely try it again for my next car.

Sorry about your bad encounter with the VW, it really sucks when something like this happens. But this got me thinking, cars in Europe and the US are rather different. For example, Ford is not good at all here. Also, Opel are becoming a major force in Europe now, but in the US, as far as I know, it is known as Saturn or Buick, which is kind of strange, changing the name of the car for different parts of the world...
