I found this on-line; I refer to the third letter in the column, of course. Not that I had to read it again, as I remember it almost word-for-word from when it appeared in the newspaper 26 years ago.
 
Uh, ouch!! That should really keep people from telling their girlfriends about their fetish!!

I am more fascinated by the other two letters though....that is...I don't know whether I should call it hilarious or ridiculous!
 
I remember that Abby wasn't into tickling. If she was around today to visit this forum she would probably be 😡.

To be fair, that person's letter appeared to describe non-consentual tickling, and in that case Abby was right to describe her boyfriend as sadistic... but she does also really seem anti-tickling in general, which is just silly.

In all seriousness though, I can see how it would be a problem if she really doesn't like and and doesn't want to endure it.

As much I enjoy this fetish, I side with the girlfriend in this situation. Tickling is great, but there needs to be a mutual understanding. Sounds like this dude just did whatever the hell he wanted with no respect for her boundaries. I'm a little surprised that anyone would side with him, honestly.

I remember having a 'Would You Rather' game at my house. I had a lessons teacher who would come over for an hour to work, and then occasionally stayed to chat and have dinner. One day we played that game and the question came up on the card that was something to this degree:

Would you rather endure 15 minutes of non-stop tickling or 10 minutes of papercuts?

She scoffed and replied IMMEDIATELY, "10 minutes of papercuts. I hate being touched and tickled."

I think that about sums it up.

I do remember seeing this letter posted in the past.

As much as I hate to say it, the girlfriend is right. Think how any one of us would feel if we weren't into tickling, and we had a partner who tickled us until we were physically exhausted. It would not be a good feeling.

A more wise approach in this situation, if the bf liked to tickle her, (even if he couldn't describe it as a "fetish" back then, because such was not out in the open like it is today)
would have been something like "Honey, I enjoy tickling you, but I know it is intense. Can I try doing it for.. 30 seconds or a minute at a time, and try to build you up to it, where you might get used to it, and it wont seem so painful" The fact that the bf kept tickling her until she was essentially in physical discomfort, shows he had no regard for her feelings, and isnt the fundemental for a sound, healthy relationship. I agree with Abby. The gf had every right to break up with him, if he was so blatantly insensitive to her feelings.

Over the years I have seen several tickling letters to both "Dear Abby" and Ann Landers. I found it interesting that although these two women were twins they seemed to have different takes on tickling. Ann Landers pretty much was objective and gave opinions based on the circumstances. Abby absolutely hated ticklers in all forms and had nothing good to say about them. I remember that letter. It was one of several I cut out years ago and saved.

As you may know, Dear Abby and Ann Landers were twin sisters. Maybe Ann was the 'ler, Abby the 'lee, the reason Abby was such a prude about tickling?
